CNAIR FAQ
We've answered some of the most common questions from those interested in accessing our materials or other resources.
We are here to help, and we love hearing from you! If you have a question not covered below, or if you want additional information, please email us at [email protected].
Visiting the APS
How do I make an appointment to visit the APS?
Anyone wishing to view CNAIR materials in-person can do so via appointment. Please send your expected date(s) of visit to [email protected]. If you will be traveling with a group, please include everyone's names so we can ensure we have enough seats available. You do not need to have academic affiliation to visit the APS.
I heard that the APS has materials related to my culture, community, or family. How do I find them?
The Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR) has an Indigenous Materials Guide you can search via Culture, Language and Geolocation. You can view the guide here: https://indigenousguide.amphilsoc.org. You can also search our Printed Materials (such as books, magazines, newspapers, etc.) for cultural material here: https://opac.amphilsoc.org. You can also reach out to us directly with questions at [email protected].
Accessing CNAIR materials
How do I request items to view at the library?
All material requests are via a no-fee Aeon account. You can set up your Aeon account here: https://aeon.amphilsoc.org/. Once you have an account, you are able to request materials directly through APS finding aids here: https://as.amphilsoc.org/ Look for the Aeon Request button in the top right corner of the finding aid.
I can't see the Aeon Request button, how do I request materials?
If you are seeing a light-yellow box with the message "Select an item to initiate a request," this could mean you have not selected a specific file in the finding aid yet. Navigate to the item you want to request under the right-handed column titled "Collection organization."
If you are still experiencing issues, please email us at [email protected]. While many collections are working properly, due to a recent migration some finding aids are experiencing technical trouble with the Aeon request plug-in. When in doubt, reach out to [email protected]!
I see that there is a link to the Digital Library for the material I want to view. How do I get the link to open?
Due to a recent system migration, some links to the Digital Library are experiencing issues opening correctly. We are also experiencing a separate issue with bot attacks that can slow down some of our systems. If you encounter a broken link, please email us at [email protected]. We will do our best to direct you to the corrected link, or provide a pdf copy of the material, when available.
Why is some material listed as restricted?
Materials can be restricted for a number of reasons following our Protocols for the Treatment of Indigenous Materials, or due to personal privacy concerns or agreements with the donor. Please email us at [email protected] if you want to know about specific materials' restrictions. Please also contact us if you have concerns about material that is not currently restricted.
How do I request access to archival material that is listed as restricted or culturally sensitive?
If you wish to view material that is restricted due to cultural sensitivity concerns, please email us at [email protected]. Please include a link to the material if you are able.
When will my photoduplication order be ready?
We are working diligently to fulfill photoduplication orders, but are currently experiencing a significant backlog. Rest assured, we will work as quickly as possible to get your material to you. If it has been more than 6 weeks since you last heard from us or submitted your photoduplication request, please reach out to [email protected] for an updated estimated delivery date. Thank you in advance for your patience with us!
I'm looking for information about traditional foodways [or basketry, gender roles, etc.], but I can't find anything when I search the Indigenous Subject Guide for that topic. Do you not have any materials related to that?
Our materials are not generally described by topic within the finding aid. Due to the nature of creation, our collection materials are primarily centered around linguistic and anthropological themes. That does not mean materials on topics like these do not exist, but it is hard for us as archivists to be able to pinpoint where this information may be within the collections.
One way to narrow down your search is to research specific linguists or anthropologists that were concerned with your topic of interest in order to identify relevant materials within the APS collections.
Programming and Funding
How do I apply for funding to visit the APS?
Applications for CNAIR Fellowships and Internships open in November of each year, and applications are due between January and March, depending on the specific opportunity.
We also offer travel funding for an individual or a group of people seeking to examine materials at the APS to further Indigenous community-based priorities through our Indigenous Community Research Fund. Letter of Interest are accepted on a rolling basis.
