Louis Bissieres recently defended his PhD in American economic history at Universite Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne (IDHE.S). His research focuses on trade in the Philadelphia area in the aftermath of the American Revolution. Exploiting business records (mainly account books and correspondence), he investigates the structure and dynamics of merchant networks thus questioning the participation of late 18th century-Americans in the market economy. Expanding this research, his next project will address the question of the development of banking practices in rural America in the Early Republic.
