Election to the American Philosophical Society honors extraordinary accomplishments in all fields. Those accomplishments don’t end upon induction, however. In this week’s APS Member News Digest, read about a new Nobel laureate, a leader in literature, and several more illustrious prizes.
- The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth (APS 2022), jointly with Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics”
- Louise Erdrich (APS 2023) has been named the 2026 Recipient of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, honoring her decades of influential writing, as reported in Native News Online and ABC News
- France A. Córdova (APS 2022) has received the 2026 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- Martha Nussbaum (APS 1995) has been honored with the 2026 John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity from the Library of Congress
