American astronomer Maria Mitchell (1818-1889) is best known for discovering a comet in 1847, later known as "Miss Mitchell's Comet." She was the first woman elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and would be elected to the APS alongside two other women in 1869.
