Anna Amramina Doel holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota where she trained with women historians who pioneered the history of science, technology, medicine, and American history. An undergraduate degree in linguistics and intercultural communication from her native city of Moscow, Russia, comes in handy in navigating the Cold War world for her current book project, Friends in Odd Places: U.S.-Soviet Scientific Collaboration in the Cold War. The book explores the complex and unexpectedly productive relationship between American and Soviet researchers at a time when such connections were questioned and restricted. Focusing on earth and environmental sciences and seeking equal representation for both sides of collaboration, the project has been supported with fellowships from the Geological Society of America, the American Meteorological Society, the Association for Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Linda Hall Library.
