South African anti-apartheid activist and statesman Nelson Mandela (APS 1994) was the first president of South Africa elected in a fully representative democratic election. In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role overseeing the official end to apartheid and a peaceful transition to democratic rule.
