Election to the American Philosophical Society honors extraordinary accomplishments in all fields. Those accomplishments don’t end upon induction, however. In this week’s APS Member News Digest, read about consciousness and AI, “illusions of understanding” in the sciences, and journalism as civic infrastructure.

  • In an interview with Nautilus, Peter Godfrey-Smith (APS 2022) was asked whether recent events have changed his view on the topic of AI consciousness
  • Richard Shiffrin (APS 2005) and Stephen Stigler (APS 2006), alongside coauthor Frank Keil, published an essay titled “Illusions of Understanding in the Sciences” in Computational Brain & Behavior
  • Alberto Ibargüen (APS 2022) argued  that “journalism is civic infrastructure” in an op-ed for The Miami Herald
  • Kara Walker (APS 2018) learned about her ancestors in a new episode of Finding Your Roots
