Charles Darwin (1809–82) was a biologist, naturalist, and geologist. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on evolutionary biology and natural selection, informed by his studies on finches and tortoises in the Galápagos Islands. As a budding scientist, he was inspired by the professional scientists with whom he surrounded himself.
