Book Design

Liam Allaire is a book designer at HarperCollins Publishers, where he focuses on book interior design. He also serves as art director of Primer Press, an independent literary magazine. Based in Philadelphia, his work moves between the fine details of a page and the bigger picture of how design shapes the reader’s experience.

Jennifer Blanc-Tal is Production and Art Director at Rutgers University Press, where she directs the production department and oversees the design and production of the Press’s books. She approaches book cover design as a highly collaborative process, one built on relationships and trust among designers, authors, editors, and production teams. Under her leadership, the Press’s titles have repeatedly earned recognition for cover and book design in the Association of University Presses’ Book, Jacket, and Journal Show. Over a career spanning trade, educational, and scholarly publishing, she has previously held design roles at Penguin Random House and McGraw-Hill Education. She holds an MA from New York University and a BFA from Long Island University.

Kimberly Glyder’s studio specializes in book design, illustration, and lettering. Her work has been featured in the AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers show, the Type Director’s Club Annual Exhibition, Print magazine, American Illustration, the American University Presses Book Jacket and Journal Show, and the New York Book Show. Clients range from small presses such Lanternfish Press, Library of America, Graywolf Press, and a wide range of University Presses, to large publishers including Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, Simon and Schuster, and Sourcebooks. Kimberly is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and lives in the Philadelphia area with her husband and two children.

Jason Kernevich is a co-founder and creative director at The Heads of State. For over 20 years, he’s been designing, illustrating, writing, strategizing, and doing whatever else the projects require. He also teaches at Tyler School of Art Architecture, where he studied. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and daughter.

Publishing salons are hosted every other month by the APS Press on a variety of topics related to publishing, with the goal of bringing together Philly's vibrant writing/publishing/reading community. All are welcome!
