Born in New Hampshire in 1815 and a graduate of Harvard Law, Holmes practiced law in St. Louis before returning to become a professor at Harvard. Despite this success, the legal field, it seems never caught his attention. Holmes did no legal writing, but was widely interested in other subjects, especially those related to philosophy and science. When he was nearly 80 years old, he wrote this extensive treatise on gravitation and electricity that is remarkable for its length, detail, and evidence of wide-ranging intellectual curiosity.
