Library Resident Research Fellowships
Do I have to prepare a report?
No. We do require that you complete an exit questionnaire after you have completed your Fellowship.
Will I receive the number of months residency I request?
The length of the Fellowship term is deterimined by the review committee based upon your application and whether it believes there is sufficient materials in the APS Library to warrant the number of months requested. Most applicants are awarded a one-month Fellowship.
At what level of expertise should I write my proposal?
Your application will be read and evaluated by a committee usually composed of six professionals within and from outside the APS.
May I accept a fellowship from any other institution?
Yes. But if you are awarded a Library Fellowship you may not take it at the same time during which you are working on another institution’s fellowship.
May I apply to another grant/fellowship given by the APS in a given grant cycle?
Yes. But if you are awarded a Library Fellowship you may not take it at the same time during which you are working on another APS grant or fellowship.
If I receive a Fellowship, when will I receive my stipend?
When you arrive at the Library for your Fellowship a check will be given to you for the full amount of your stipend, usually within the first couple of days of your residency.
May I apply for a Fellowship if I will take my preliminary examinations during the tilme my application is being evaluated?
Yes. You must indicate this in your application. If you are awarded a Fellowship, you may not accept it until the APS receives word that you have successfully passed your preliminary examinations.
What does "preliminary examinations" mean?
Most American colleges and universities require doctoral candidates to successfully complete preliminary examinations prior to working on their dissertations. If you are a doctoral candidate at a foreign college or university and are working on your dissertation, you may apply for a Fellowship.
