Bruce Wallace (1920-2015) was a geneticist whose research centers on population dynamics and speciation of Drosophila. He was born May 18, 1920 in McKean, Pennsylvania, attended the McKean Public School system. He completed an A.B. in Zoology from Columbia College and in 1949 earned a Ph.D. in genetics from Columbia. From 1947 to 1949 he served as a research associate at the Carnegie Institute of Washington in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., then from 1949-1958 served as geneticist and later assistant director of the Biological Laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor.

In 1958, he left Cold Spring Harbor for an associate professorship in genetics at Cornell University, becoming professor of genetics in 1961. After 20 years, he left Cornell for Virginia Tech, joining their biology department in 1981. Two years later, he became the Biology Department's second University Distinguished Professor, a position that he held until his retirement in 1994.

Wallace published over 15 books and over 100 research papers, mostly before his arrival at Virginia Tech, most of which used Drosophila as a genetic model. A recipient of numerous honors and awards during his career, he was appointed to the National Academy of Sciences in 1970. Throughout his career, but especially during his later years, ecology and environmental science gained his interest.
