Series I-A. Research notes | 1900-1957 | 28 folders | Box Series IA: 1-2
Loose notes and notebooks on Wintu and Patwin linguistics and ethnography, arranged alphabetically by author or collector and, within that, by title. Although most of the material if original, the series include Jeremiah Curtin's "Wintu words and names" and photocopies of Roland Dixon's Wintu notebooks. The series also contains materials collected by other linguists and ethnographers, including nine notebooks kept by A. M. Halpern, 1936 (see related notebooks in Servies III-A). Halpern's notebooks include notes from several locations, including Colusa, Enterprise, Rumsey, and Stonyford. The series also includes an important series of notebooks by A. L. Kroeber, 1900-1924, concerning various dialects or areas of Hill, River, Colusa, and Long Valley Patwin. These notebooks also contain occasional information on Atsugewi, Yana, Salt Pomo, Lake Miwok, Kato, and Pomo. Finally, the series includes an index to Paul Radin's work on Patwin and Wintun, notebooks by Radin, T. T. Waterman (on southeastern Wintu and Patwin phonetics), Howard Wilson (on Grimes Patwin, taken 1903 an annotated by Kroeber), and a computer printout of Donald Ultan's fieldnotes on Patwin (arranged by book number, see also Series I-B).

Series II. Yuki Materials | 1900-1968 | 7.25 linear feet | Box Series II: 3-8
Material gathered by A. L. Kroeber, who sent a list of his files to Dell Hymes (see Ser. II-A).
Series II-A. Research notes | 1900-1960 | 48 folders | Box Series IIA: 3-4
Notes arranged alphabetically by author or recorder, and then alphabetically by title. One folder includes comments by Kroeber and Hymes on Hans Uldall's "Preliminary report on Yuki tones," and there is a related file on Yuki tones. The series is rich in material collected by A. L. Kroeber, including a series of notebooks filed by number (e.g. Notebook 22) or title, when unnumbered, a few folders containing homonyms and near-homonyms or minimal and near-minial pairs (one done by Pitkin), as well as several folders of notes and a list of Yuki material prepared for Dell Hymes, glossed with reference to the Kroeber drawer and item numbers, as originally stored. The notes range from 1900 to 1932, with annotations made in 1957-1958. The notebooks dating from 1900-1908 are largely concerned with Yuki language and stories, and some contain material on Wintu, Pomo, Sinkyone, and Coast Yurok. Among other items are a folder containing Fang-Kuei (Fanggui) Li's notes on Yuki tones from 1927, with annotations from 1957; two folders of Pitkin's notes on materials received from Kroeber and on Yuki phonemics, 1957, several folders of Hans Uldall's notes on Yuki stems, tones, and suffixes, and a bibliography by Kroeber of Mayo-Polynesian languages.

Section 3: Northern Wintun Word Lists (Code: W)
(3) Introduction | ||||
Description by Pitkin: "The five word lists included in this section, each identified by the letter "W", are ambiguous as to the language recorded. Northern Wintun is used here to include forms which are either Wintu or Nomlaki, but are not clearly identified as either. Since no detailed treatment of Nomlaki exists on the basis of which to distinguish it from Wintu, and since these are 'early' recordings without sufficiently reliable phonetic detail or semantic scope to serve as a basis for determination, they have been left with the identification of Northern Wintun in the absence cf further indications in the manuscripts themselves. They conform to the northern pattern phonlogically and morphologically rather than to a southern (Patwin) model. Wintu and Nomlaki are thought, in any case, to be most closely related, if indeed they are not merely two dialects cf the same language."
(3.1) W1: Curtin, Jeremiah. "Creation Myths..."
Word list culled by Pitkin from Jeremiah Curtin's "Creation Myths of Primitive America in Relation to the Religious History and Mental Development of Mankind" (Boston, 1898), pages 3-278. Description by Pitkin: "This word list has been culled from Curtin's published 'Creation Myths...' and conforms to a Northern Wintun model as far as phonology and morphology indicate. While the place names included allow an interpretation as Wintu, some of the items are otherwise unattested for Wintu. The phonetic evidence is ambiguous: no contrast between /k/ and /q/ is recorded by Curtin, although that contrast is distinctive of Wintu. But older recordings of Wintu do not note the distinction, and modern recordings of Nomlaki are themselves ambiguous: Pitkin and Swadesh write /q/ but Halpern does not. Nomlaki dialects may themselves have varied in this respect. Curtin writes no glottal stop or glottalized consonants, but while /ch/ is written for /č/, /ts/ is used for /ć/ a glottalized palatal or apical affricate. Both /h/ and /x/ are recorded as /h./ and /i/ indicates both /i/ and /ai/. His /hi/ appears for the lateral affricate or spirant, plain or glottalized. In short, some phonemic contrasts are absent and vowel length and stress are essentially unindicated, although a few acute accent marks appear."
(3.2) W2: Kroeber, Alfred. Unpublished field notes, notebook #12 | 1901
Specific language not identified. Notes collected in Trinity County, California. Description by Pitkin: "These seventeen words are interesting for at least two unusual forms: 'river' and 'dog' as well as the very indirect phonetic evidence provided by the transcription. They appear among field notes identified as Trinity County Wintu field notes, although no location or informant is otherwise specified to aid identification or dialect."
(3.3) W3: Curtin, Jeremiah. Bureau of American Ethnology, Ms. 3805 (part) | Undated
Primarily includes place names and time terms. Identified as "probably Nomlaki." Description by Pitkin: "Although the provenience of these forms is net given, it is probably Nomlaki on the basis of the place names referred to. The transcription here is essentially the same as for W1, except the diacritics amplify the phonetic values of the vowels. These forms are identified as Wintun time and place names." According to Cody Pata in 2022, this is probably Mēm Waylēaqah (River North-Talk, spoken by River Nomlaki), based on place names.
(3.4) W4: Gatschet, Albert S. Zwölf Sprachen aus dem Südwesten Nordamerikas | 1876
Collected by Dana in Colorado. Identified only as "Digger" by Gatschet. Found in book published in Weimar, Herman Böhlau, 1876. Description by Pitkin: "These twenty-five forms collected, by Dana have the same origin as the forms collected by Loew in W5. They are of unusual interest only because they were collected in Colorado, and among the earliest recordings of a northern variety of Wintun. They are identified as 'Digger' by Gatschet, but that term was widely ascribed to various California groups. Note the /kt/ initial cluster in 'foot' which is entirely unique."
(3.5) W5: Gatschet, Albert S. Zwölf Sprachen aus dem Südwesten Nordamerikas | 1876
Identified by Pitkin as "Wintu (probably)." Collected by Oscar Loew in Colorado. Identified only as "Digger" by Gatschet. Found in book published in Weimar, Herman Böhlau, 1876, pages 77-79, 98-114. Description by Pitkin: "These forms were collected by Oscar Loew in Colorado and are identified by Gatschet as 'Digger Indianer', a term used for most California Indians and not distinctive of any group. There is no explanation of what permitted the collection of these forms so distant from where they originated. His transcription merges a number of contrasts: /b/ and /p/ are written as /b/; /k/ and /q/ as /k/; but /q/ is also written as /g/; /kh/ is written for /x/ and /q/; glottalization is not noted, some vowels are confused; but some vowel lengths are indicated by a double dash which also is also used to separate syllables, as is a single dash. An initial /kl/ in warrior is written for glottalized lateral affricate; /tl/ for the same medially in "eight"; and /khl/ for the lateral spirant medially in "sixty". Initially /ts/ is written for glottalized /č/ in 'green" and occasionally /sh/ is written for the retroflexed /s/. While /u/ is written for /w/, /v/ is also, as is expectable for a german speaker."
Section 4: Nomlaki Word Lists (Code: N)
(4) Introduction | ||||
Description by Pitkin: "The five word lists included in this sections each identified by the letter 'N', are taken from manuscripts of unpublished field notes, except for the first, N1. At this writing there is still one speaker, but the language is extinct, and these materials probably constitute virtually all the data available, unless, contrary to expectations, another speaker available for field work, or another manuscript should appear. "Nomlaki has also been referred to as Noamlakee, Wintun (the same as the name of the family of languages), Central Wintun, Northern Wintun (Barrett), and Nomlaki-Wintun (Swadesh); the dialect designations Hill and River Wintun refer to varieties of Nomlaki (Kroeber, Goldschmidt). "The language was spoken in Tehama County, California, south of Wintu and north of Patwin in the Sacramento River valley and to the west to the foothills of the Coast Range of mountains. Since the forms available resemble Wintu so considerably, it is not clear whether the languages were mutually intelligible. One may presume that the phonemic inventories are the same in interpreting the transcriptions."

(4.2) N2: Swadesh, Morris. Wintunian Word Lists | 1953
Wintunian Word Lists, unpublished ms., no date. Pitkin's description: "This 200 word list is copied from unpublished field notes sent to me by the author in 1961 and early 1962. In his letter he identifies the Nomlaki forms as collected from "Jeff Jones, 88, in 1953. The bulk of the material was from Andrew Freeman, 82. Recorded on 21 July 1953. A.F.'s people were from łoppom 'Tule', now called Moundhouse, near Paskenta. sontiloqo (rocksliae) close by. Address of both Gerber, genl delivery. Another informant, Ann Raglin, 70-75, was used for a few words." Later in his letter to me, dated 13 December, 1960, he writes, 'Naturally, you will find phonetic errors, because these are direct field notes, sometimes checked a second time and sometimes not, and without the benefit of cataloguing and cross-checking.' "The typist is identified by Swadesh as Victor Vilella, typist in the Instituto de Historia, Mexico City. The phonetics are in fact excellent. In comparison with those of Halpern and Pitkin they are in entire accord. Although Swadesh also writes, 'I send the first carbon because it is cleaner copy than the original after corrections. The job was done in a hurry, with the typist trying to follow several instructions without my direct supervision,' they are certainly reliable transcriptions. The forms are these from the Swadesh lexicostatistic diagnostic 200 word list arranged alphabetically by English gloss in their original typescript, which is now in the archives of the California Survey of Indian and other Languages, Department of Linguistics, University of California at Berkeley."
(4.3) N3: Swadesh, Morris. Wintun languages field notes, Nomlaki vocabulary. | 1953
Informants: Andrew Freeman, Jeff Jones [J.], Ann Raglin. Pitkin's description: "The following word list is/of the very same provenience already described for W2, having been copied from a typescript based on the field work of 1953, and new in my possession. The same informants already mentioned provided the forms; those marked with 'J.' are from Jeff Jones. The typescript sent me by Swadesh has four columns of Wintun forms: Patwin, Central (Nomlalk), Northern (Wintu), and one labeled meaning. At the end of the typescript is a hand-written list of another thirty forms here included."
(4.4) N4: Pitkin, Harvey. Nomlaki field notes, Paskenta dialect. | 1958
Pitkin's description: "The following word list of my own field notes is based on the Paskenta dialect of Nomlaki (so identified by the informants). The native speakers consulted were Maude Garcia (MG), and Anna Raglin (AR), whose initials are used to identify only those forms that were not shared. Identical forms collected from both are unidentified."
(4.5) N5: Halpern, A.M. Nomlaki field notes. | 1936
Pitkin's description: "The following word list is taken from handwritten field notes recorded in short-hand notebooks. The informant is identified as Santiago McDaniel. The notes are dated nay 6, 1936."
Section 5: Patwin Word Lists (Code: P)
(5) Introduction | ||||
Description by Pitkin: "The following nineteen unpublished word lists representing Patwin are each identified by the letter "P". PG refers to the Grimes dialect, PH to the Hill dialect, and PR to the River dialect. Patwin has also been called Patween, Southern Wintun, Copeh, and Southern Copehan. Patwin continues to be spoken by a number of older people numbering perhaps not more than two dozen, more, that is, than the other languages. As is the case for Nomlaki, there are ethnographic accounts but no published linguistic descriptions. "To the north of the Patwin were the Nomlaki; to the east the Maidu (Valley Nisenan) ana Plains Miwok; to the south the Yokuts and Costanoans; and to the west the Coast Miwok, Wappo, Lake Miwok, Southeast Pomo, Eastern Pomo, Yuki, and Northeast Pomo (Salt Porno). Patwin was spoken at the diffusional crossroads of aboriginal northern California to the north of San Fransisco Bay in the western half of the Sacramento River valley. "In addition to five vowels occuring both short and long /i e a o u/, the probable consonant phonemes are much the same as for the Wintun area to the north, lacking however a post velar series of stops and spirant, and /θ/, and showing a three-way contrast in velar stops /k kh k'/. Otherwise Patwin is in structure very much like Wintu."

It may be the earliest recorded variety of this linguistic family extant. It is difficult to say whether Suisun, which may be what has also been designated as Huichun, Juichun, Carquin and Karkin, was a separate language or a variety of Patwin."
(6.1) S1: Arroyo de la Cuesta, Fray Felipe. Southern Wintun vocabulary. | 1821

Pitkin's description: "The following word list is taken from a 94 page manuscript, handwritten on October 15, 1884, identified as 'Paspoicono' and collected from 'Láktciharis (mikĕ)".
(7.2) WW2: Curtin, Jeremiah. Bureau of American Ethnology Ms. 841. | 1888-1889
Pitkin's description: "The following word list is taken from a 78 page handwritten set of BAE Schedules, numbered 1 through 29. No informant is identified but it is clearly Wintu."
(7.3) WW3: Curtin, Jeremiah. Bureau of American Ethnology Ms. 841, (stamped 1926) | 1888-1889
Pitkin's description: "The following word list of lexical items, although not identified by informant is clearly Wintu, and has the same provenience as the previous ms. WW2 in 7.2."
(7.4) WW4: Curtin, Jeremiah. Bureau of American Ethnology Ms. 1453 (text) | 1884
Pitkin's description: "The following short word list is of the same provenience as ms. WW 1, 7.1."
(7.5) WW5: Dixon, Roland B. Outlines of Wintun Grammar. | 1909
Pitkin's description: "The following forms have been taken from the above, published as a chapter, pages 461-476 in the Putnam Anniversary Volume. These forms, words and morphemes, appear to be Wintu, although fifty years later upon checking them with native speakers during field work, the syntax of the forms as originally presented in text by Dixon was found not to be able to be re-elicited without considerable revision by my informant, Carrie B. Dixon."
(7.6) WW6: Gatschet, Albert S. Bureau of American Ethnology Ms. 1564. | 1889
Pitkin's description: "The following word list is taken from a 25 page ms. and although no informant is identified, it is clearly Wintu."
(7.7) WW7: Harrington, J.P. Wintu field notes. | 1931
Pitkin's description: "These field notes were apparently collected while trying to collect Yana (some Achumawi, Pit River, was obtained on the same field trip). His Wintu informants are given as Chas., Ralph and Mike, and the material was collected November 6-18, 1931. This may be all the Wintu Harrington collected. His recordings are extremely reliable (there is included in the following his ownphonetic description where he occasionally provides it." Related material: See also letter from Mary Haas in Correspondence series, which accompanied this set of material and discusses how Harrington obtained it while trying to obtain Yana information.
(7.8) WW8: Henshaw, Henry W. Bureau of American Ethnology Ms. 2114 (part) | 1910-1919
Pitkin's description: "This short word list is taken from one page of unpublished manuscript. No informant or locality is mentioned, but it is clearly Wintu."
(7.9) WW9: Kroeber, A.L. Trinity County Wintu field notes, notebook #12. | 1901
Pitkin's description: "This brief list is probably one of the few recordings of the Trinity County variety of Wintu. No informant is mentioned."
(7.10) WW10: Merriam, C. Hart. Wintun Field Notes. | 1925
Pitkin's description: "The following few forms of 'O-kwahn-oó-choo' are culled from among Shasta vocabulary items given in Field Check Lists, Pacific Coast Region, collected in October 1925. They are Upper McCloud River forms. The original mss. are in the Merriam Collection of the Anthropology Department, University of California at Berkeley."
(7.11) WW11: Merriam, C. Hart. Wintun Field Notes. | 1925
Pitkin's description: "The following few items of 'O-kwahn-noó-tsoo' (sic) are Upper McCloud River forms of the same provenience as the preceding ms. WW 10, 7.10, identified as 'O-kwahn'-noo-choohish Tribe' (sic), which identification here is ample testimony to the vagaries and variation in Merriam's transcription."
(7.12) WW12: Radin, Paul. Wintu Lexicon. | Undated
Pitkin's description: "The following word list is a part of the collection of Radin materials of the American Philosophical Society, made available by Dell H. Hymes."
(7.13) WW13: Swadesh, Morris. Wintunian word lists. | Undated
Pitkin's description: "This 200 word list has the same provenience as N2. (See 4.2 for source etc.) Swadesh cites this as, 'N. Wintu recorded 18 July 1953 from Joe Charles, 75 at Stillwater, Cal. Born Copper City, Bull Hill, Shasta County. Lived at McCloud River, later at Stillwater. Worked 10 years at Chewawa, age 16-26, as baker etc., industrial teacher etc., was informant and guide for Harrington.' (See WW7 in 7.7.)"
(7.14) WW14: Swadesh, Morris. Wintun languages field notes. | Undated
