Abstract

Papers of the human geneticist, H. Eldon Sutton, including files from his tenure as editor of the American Journal of Human Genetics (1964-1969) and president of the American Society of Human Genetics (1979). Sutton was born in Cameron, Texas, and completed his B.S. in Chemistry, M.S., and Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin by 1953. He was recruited by Lee Dice to join the University of Michigan's Institute of Human Biology in 1952, where he worked with Jack Schull and Jim Neel. After leaving the University of Michigan in 1964, Sutton returned to the University of Texas at Austin as an associate professor in the Department of Zoology. There, he researched disease and population genetics by studying blood antigens and amino acid metabolism. Author of notable 1965 textbook An Introduction to Human Genetics. Materials such as correspondence regarding research, conferences, and service on other committees are also included in addition to draft materials of published works.

Background note

H. Eldon Sutton (1927- ) was born in Cameron, Texas, and completed his B.S. in Chemistry, M.S., and Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin by 1953.

He was recruited by Lee Dice to join the University of Michigan's Institute of Human Biology in 1952, where he worked with Jack Schull and Jim Neel. He also organized the Human Genetics Department at Michigan, which he joined as a faculty member in 1956. Using his biochemistry background, Sutton researched disease and population genetics by studying blood antigens and amino acid metabolism. In a 1962 study titled "The Hereditary Abilities Study: Genetic Variation in Human Biochemical Traits", he and his coauthors estimated the heritability of biochemical variation by testing a large set of monozygotic and dizygotic twins for both metabolite variation in blood, saliva, and urine and the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (Sutton et al. [1962]. Am. J. Hum. Genet. 14, 64–82).

After leaving the University of Michigan in 1964, Sutton returned to the University of Texas at Austin as an associate professor in the Department of Zoology. There, he continued his population biochemical variation studies, focused on Indigenous peoples. The year after returning to Texas, Sutton published notable textbook An Introduction to Human Genetics (Sutton [1965]. New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston). Sutton also published an article co-authored with geneticist Robert Wagner titled Genetics: A Human Concern (1985). His later work focused on mutagenesis, and he was hired by paint company PPG Industries in 1977 to consult on the mutagenetic properties of sodium azide. He remained a professor in the University of Texas at Austin Department of Zoology until the department reorganized in 1998; Sutton proceeded to join the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology in the School of Biological Sciences. He was given emeritus status in 2000.

He was president of the American Society of Human Genetics in 1979 after having served on its board from 1961-1970 and was editor of the American Journal of Human Genetics from 1964-1969. He was also a founder of the Texas Genetics Society and served as president of the society in 1979. Sutton served on the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, which was later reformed as the Radiation Effects Research Foundation; he continued to work with scientists there throughout his career.

Scope and content

The collection includes correspondence from the course of Sutton's career with colleagues in the field of genetics and biochemistry on topics such as genetic experiments and exchanging blood and plasma samples. It also includes materials from Sutton's 1964-1969 tenure as editor of the American Journal of Human Genetics, files related to administrative work with and his presidency (1979) of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), material on the First Conference on Genetics (sponsored by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation). The series of his work with organizations is particularly rich in material relating to his work on environmental health, population genetics, and the effects of radiation. The Printed Materials series includes Sutton's draft of An Introduction to Human Genetics and a corrected manuscript for Genes, Enzymes, and Inherited Diseases, as well as Leslie Clarence Dunn's personally annotated first edition copy of his 1965 book A Short History of Genetics.

The collections of the APS include a significant number of holdings in the field of genetics. Correspondence with Sutton also appears in the papers of James Van Gundia Neel, Baruch Blumberg, and Curt Stern.

Some of Sutton's papers are also held at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin, most notably the data collected in the 1960s during his Austin Black Families study (https://legacy.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utcah/03227/cah-03227.html).
