Background note

Herbert Friedman was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1916 and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1936 (BS) and from Johns Hopkins (Phd, Physics). He joined the Naval Research Laboratory in 1940, and until about 1950 maintained an active research program in applied x-ray spectroscopy. In 1949 he conducted his first of many space experiments comprising a set of x-ray and ultraviolet sensitive geiger counters to observe the Sun.

Friedman is recognized as one of the pioneers of space science for his contributions to solar physics, upper atmospheric physics and x-ray astronomy. He was also recognized as one of the great statesman of the discipline having been a member of the President's Science Advisory Committee, the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission, the Space Science Board of the National Academy of Sciences, the Governing Board of the National Academy of Sciences. His awards include the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the National Medal of Science, the William Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Society, the Henry Norris Russell Award of the American Astronomical Society and the Wolf Foundation Prize in Physics. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Science in 1960. He retired from the Naval Research Laboratory in 1980 but continued an association with the Laboratory as a consultant and as Chief Scientist, emeritus. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1964.

Collection overview

 2.5 linear feet

Series I consists of Dr. Friedman's personal correspondence. It is organized alphabetically with the bulk placed in miscellaneous files. The largest file consists of correspondence with Edward O. Hulburt, Dr. Friedman's mentor and namesake of the Edward O. Hulburt Center for Space Research at the Navy Research Laboratory.

 0.5 linear feet

Series II is comprised of Dr. Friedman's research material from his time at the Navy Research Laboratory. It consists mainly of diagrams and charts of experiments, as well as some research notebooks.

 1.5 linear feet

Series III consists of manuscripts and printed copies of Dr. Friedman's works. Included are articles for journals and magazines, as well as book manuscripts, including The Amazing Universe, The Sun and Earth and The Astronomer's Universe.

 7.0 linear feet

Series IV, the second largest in the collection, consists of correspondence, official reports and papers from Dr. Friedman's career at the Navy Research Laboratory. The series includes work from scientists that Dr. Friedman worked with and supervised, including Dr. Talbot A. Chubb and Dr. George R. Carruthers. The correspondence is organized chronologically, as names are rarely used; internal code numbers are used instead. Dr. Friedman was, for some time, Code 7100, but used other designations as well. Signatures on memos and letters are best consulted to be sure of the author.

 0.5 linear feet

Series V is made up of materials regarding the patents applied for, and awarded to Dr. Friedman during his time at the Navy Research Laboratory. In his lifetime Dr. Friedman was awarded 50 patents, all of which are reflected here in some manner.

 1.5 linear feet

Series VI contains works by others, including some his co-workers at the Navy Research Laboratory. Prominently featured are the works of Talbot A. Chubb, George R. Carruthers, Irving Blifford and Riccardo Giacconi, co-recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize for Physics.

 10.5 linear feet

Series VII, the largest in the collection, consists of correspondence, administrative and report material from Dr. Friedman's membership in various professional and private organizations. The series highlights the prominent role Dr. Friedman played in many organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Philosophical Society, the Cosmos Club, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, as well as the National Research Council. Correspondence in the series is organized as Dr. Friedman's original files were, by date.

 0.5 linear feet

Series VIII contains the many certificates and awards bestowed to Dr. Friedman during his lifetime, as well as related correspondence and announcements. Among Dr. Friedman's awards that the series contains are the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the National Medal of Science, the Henry Norris Russell Lectureship of the American Astronomical Society, the William Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union, and the Wolf Foundation Prize in Physics. Some material has been removed to oversize.

 0.25 linear feet

The personal material contained in Series IX includes passports, biographical and curriculum vitae material, as well as material related to Dr. Friedman's retirement from the Navy Research Laboratory. Also included is obituary and memorial material, including material relating the dedication of the Herbert Friedman Room at the Navy Research Laboratory.

 0.75 linear feet

Series X, the printed materials series, consists of published works and reprints authored mainly by others, but also including work by Dr. Friedman himself. NASA manuals regarding shuttle payload development feature prominently.

 1.5 linear feet

Series XI contains photos and images of Dr. Friedman, as well as figures from his published works and printed slides from various lectures and presentations. While few of the photos are personal snapshots, they do include photos removed from various correspondence.

 3.0 linear feet

Series XII contains audio visual material, including VHS tapes, film reels and slides. Many relate to Dr. Friedman's work with NASA and the Navy Research Lab, as well as the National Academy of Sciences sponsored PBS Series Space Age, which Dr. Friedman participated in.

 Series IV. Naval Research Laboratory
