Abstract

This volume records payments principally by John Hart, treasurer of Bucks County, Pa., of taxes, such as militia fines, forfeited debts, supplies, monthly taxes, second-class tax, and excise taxes.

Background note

David Rittenhouse was an instrument-maker, astronomer, and treasurer of Pennsylvania. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1768, and served as its president from 1791 to 1796.

Early American History Note

This small volume records the various payments David Rittenhouse, as state treasurer, received from John Hart, the treasurer for Bucks County, for the years 1779-1785. The accounts do not contain much detail aside from the amount of funds Hart received for fines, taxes, and other fees that he then transferred to the state treasury. The data may complement some of the lieutenant and treasury data contained in the Pennsylvania Archives, however.
