Abstract

This small collection of twenty-eight letters is comprised chiefly of correspondence between Burton Chance and Samuel Wood, a librarian at the Royal College of Surgeons of England who conducted bibliographic work for Chance. They concern the history of ophthalmology, with reference to Sir William Bowman, Joseph Lister, and John Milton's vision problems, among other information that Wood supplied Chance. The collection also includes letters from Karl and Frederick Weinberger concerning personal matters.

Background note

Burton Chance (1868-1965), a prominent ophthalmologist in his own right, is best known as an historian of American ophthalmology. Immediately after graduating from high school, the native Philadelphian attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. There, he studied under William Fisher Norris, Penn's first professor of ophthalmology and a leader in the burgeoning profession. Chance served as Norris' assistant at Penn's eye dispensary. In 1895, he had a residency at Wills Eye Hospital, and eventually became a chief surgeon at that prestigious institution twenty years later.

In addition to contributions to ophthalmology in documenting its history and practice, Chance published articles on color blindness and on tumors of the eye and orbit. Among his published works were: Short Studies on the History of Ophthalmology (1935), Ophthalmology (1939), and Early Printing of Medical Books and some of the Printers who Printed Them (1948).
