Early American History Note
This collection contains a number of tax lists for the collection of revenue on spirits. It begins in 1794, the year of the Whiskey Rebellion, and continues to 1803. The lists appear to be for sellers of “wine and foreign distilled spirits,” meaning that this was not the tax Whiskey rebels found odious. Although the documents are not uniform, most lists contain the distiller’s name, place of operation, and amount of tax paid.
