Abstract

The five-volume collection features a catalog of Indian captivities by Frank Deering compiled and donated by Marius Barbeau. The first volume, Mss.016.9701.D365b, is a brief bibliographic catalogue of works in the "inner vault" listed in the Walsh catalogue and a list of books "referring to, or embodying captivities, in the outer room" and not listed in the Walsh catalogue, as well as works containing similar materials.

Abstract: The volume was prepared by M. J. Walsh of Goodspeed's Book Shop in Boston, at the death of Frank C. Deering, and corrected by C. M. Barbeau in 1950. This list of Indian captivities was not made at first hand, but lists various editions which are omitted in the second volume.

Abstract: A bibligraphy, together with ethnographic and historical extracts and summaries of the collection of Indian captivities of the late Frank Cutter Deering, Saco, Maine, in keeping of Joseph G. Deering, Biddeford, Maine. Summaries of standard printed collections. Relates to norhteastern, plains, western, and Canadian Indians in particula. Those 40 works to be found in the Greenwood collection are omitted. An important set of summaries because of the inaccessibility of the colleciton. Reference made to both the Walsh and Ayer lists.

Arrangement: P. 1-1037 concern the books of Deering,; works in the libraries of Harvard, Yale, Laval and McGill Universities, the National Museum of Canada, and the Collection de Luc Lacourciere, Quebec.

Processing information: Transcriptions and extracts from manuscripts made by F.C. Deering and Edmund S. Carpenter, and manuscripts in the Seminaire de Quebec and Toronto Public Library.
