| | | | Dates: | 1865-1871 | | | | Abstract: | T. Martin Trippe was an avid amateur ornithologist from Orange, New Jersey, who spent the majority of his free time as a teenager and young man exploring the woods and observing, shooting, and collecting birds. After graduating from New York University with a degree in engineering in 1869, Trippe worked in various positions for the Iowa Central, Northern Pacific, and Albia, Knoxville, and Des Moines Railroads, continuing to devote his spare time in the interests of ornithology.
The two surviving volumes of Trippe's journals document his ornithological and natural historical observations between 1865 and 1871, including meticulously detailed records of the avifauna (and to lesser degree other fauna) in central New Jersey, central Iowa, and southern Minnesota. They include detailed, and Trippe provided year-end taxonomic and meteorological indexes for 1869, 1870, and 1871. | | | | Call #: | Mss.598.2.T73 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Circa 1917-1975 | | | | Abstract: | One of the four horsemen of the evolutionary synthesis of the 1940s, Theodosius Dobzhansky played a crucial role in bridging the gap between theoretical and empirical approaches in genetics and in promoting the Neo-Darwinian synthesis. His contributions to the biological species concept and to an understanding the evolutionary dynamics of wild populations of Drosophila were fundamental to the development of modern population genetics and evolutionary thought.
The Dobzhansky Papers are a remnant of the correspondence and writings of the geneticist and evolutionary biologist, Theodosius Dobzhansky. The correspondence (7.5 linear feet) provides insight into Dobzhansky's scientific, philosophical, and social views, particularly during the last decade of his life. Equally valuable are the 54 notebooks (ca.1917-1975) which comprise an almost uninterrupted self-commentary on Dobzhansky's career, replete with typescripts of personal letters and short essays sent to colleagues and friends. The collection also contains two unbound volumes of annotated "reminiscences" from the Columbia Oral History Project, 1962; two bound volumes of papers dedicated to him on his 70th birthday; and 1.5 linear feet of photographs. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.D65 | | | | Extent: | 12.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1851-1895 | | | | Abstract: | Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was an eminent Victorian-era biologist, best known as a passionate defender and popularizer of Darwin's theory of evolution. His partisanship earned him the nickname of "Darwin's Bulldog," although he did not accept the theory uncritically. In addition to his work in biology, he performed original research in zoology and paleontology. He is also remembered as the progenitor of a family of highly successful scientists and thinkers. This collection is made up of letters, primarily written by Huxley, on a variety of topics including the age of man, evolution, education, natural history, science, geology, spiritualism, and vivisection. The most voluminous correspondence is with Sir James Thomas Knowles (30 letters) and with Huxley's daughter, Ethel Huxley Collier, "Babs," (44 items). The 30 letters to Knowles appear in neither the
Life and Letters, nor are they listed in Dawson's guide to the Huxley Papers at the Imperial College. The other major correspondents include Charles Edward C. Appleton, Matthew Arnold, William B. Carpenter, Sir Henry Cole, George Dixon, Sir John Donnelly, Thomas Campbell Eyton, Sir William Henry Flower, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Leonard Huxley, Sir William Jenner, Sir Charles Lyell, Louis Compton Miall, Alphonse Milne-Edwards, Sir James Paget, Harry Quilter, Harry Govier Seeley, Alfred R. | | | | Dates: | 1811-1844 | | | | Abstract: | An evolutionist before Darwin, an embryologist, paleontologist, and comparative anatomist, Étienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire was a Professor of Vertebrate Zoology at the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris for the half century following the Reign of Terror. Following in the footsteps of Lamarck, Geoffroy held tenaciously to a belief in the underlying unity of organismal design, to the great change of being, and the possibility of the transmutation of species in time, amassing evidence for his claims through research in comparative anatomy, paleontology, and embryology.
The Geoffroy Collection is comprised of 0.75 linear feet of lecture notes and correspondence relating to Geoffroy's diverse interests in natural history, Egypt, comparative anatomy, analogies, paleontology, and embryology, and it is particularly rich for his studies of teratology. All items are in French. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.G287p | | | | Extent: | 0.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1684, 1733-1771 | | | | Abstract: | An early settler and prominent citizen in the Moravian heartland near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Timothy Horsfield was named justice of the peace when Northampton County was formed out of Bucks in 1752, and was one of those given responsibility for the defence of the local white and Christian Indian populations during the French and Indian War.
The Horsfield Papers offer a window onto the tumultuous history of northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1750s and 1760s. Comprised largely of correspondence and related documents between Horsfield, William Parsons, and provincial and military authorities, the collection includes important information on the Indian assaults on the region in 1756 and 1757 and the military and diplomatic response. | | | | Call #: | Mss.974.8.H78 | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | ca. 1475? | | | | Abstract: | Books of hours were among the most common devotional texts of the Middle Ages. Produced throughout western Europe until the early 16th century, books of hours were important status items, often elaborately illuminated, that might be tailored to the specific tastes of well-heeled clients to reflect interests in particular saints or to incorporate other elements of their personal lives and religious, political, or social commitments.
Although the illuminated pages have been removed from this book of hours, the gift of Timothy Matlack in 1811, it remains an elegant and ornate manuscript, with initials and line fillers in prominent gilt, red, and blue. Only one page remains from the calendar (the last), however many of the major elements of the book can be identified, including the prayers to the Virgin, the Stabat Mater Dolorosa and stations of the cross, the penitential psalms, litanies, and prayers, and the office of the dead. | | | | Call #: | Mss.264.02.R662 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1817-1875 | | | | Abstract: | The youngest son of Charles Willson Peale, Titian Ramsay Peale was an accomplished artist, naturalist, and explorer. This collection of ink, pencil, and watercolor sketches, with some engravings and lithographs, forms the bulk of Peale's artistic output. The drawings can be grouped into several periods of artistic output: pre-1818 (primarily watercolors of butterflies); from the Stephen Harriman Long Expedition to the American west in 1819-1820, on which Peale traveled as zoologist (there are views of animals, Indians, landscapes, etc.); for his 1821-1838 interlude period, spent primarily on the east coast (insects, animals, moose hunting in Marine, his trip to South America in 1830-1831, coin and medal designs); his period as a naturalist on the worldwide U.S. Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes, 1838-1842; from the 1849-1873 period when he sketched around Washington, D. C. and in New Jersey; and there are more than 160 undated sketches of: animal skulls and bones, birds, plants, fish, insects, landscapes, and zoology. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.P31.15d | | | | Extent: | 550.0 Item(s) | | | | Sections: |
