| | | | Dates: | 1819-1850 | | | | Abstract: | Through his craniometic studies of human races, the Philadelphia physician Samuel George Morton (1799-1851) exerted a profound influence on the development of physical anthropology in antebellum America, and made substantial contributions to mineralogy, paleontology, and natural history. Relating primarily to Morton's scientific interests, the Morton Papers include insights into Morton's perspectives on education, medical practice, geology and mineralogy, craniology, paleontology, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition (also known as the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842), and his two major monographs, the
Crania Americana and
Crania Aegyptiaca. Several of the letters were written by Morton in his capacity as corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
Also included in this collection are Morton's "Some Remarks on the Infrequency of Mixed Offspring Between the European and Australian Races" (1850), Joseph Barclay Pentland's notes on the aborigines of Peru (ca. 1840?), and newspaper clippings on Morton's death; a diary of Morton's trip to the West Indies, 1834, a set of craniological sketches for use in Crania Americana, and a microfilm of letters in private hands, written to Morton, 1838-1844 | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.M843 | | | | Extent: | 2.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1768-1807 | | | | Abstract: | Sarah Franklin Bache (1743-1808), a Revolutionary War patriot and daughter of Benjamin Franklin, led an active public life according to the standards of womanhood in the late eighteenth century. As the daughter of Benjamin Franklin she had an unusual access, for a woman, to the political life in revolutionary Philadelphia. Although her primary role was of caretaker of her family and home, Bache played an active role in the Revolution through her relief work and as her father's political hostess.
The Sarah Franklin Bache papers consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence ranging from 1768 to 1807 mostly of a personal nature to and from friends and relatives. The correspondence of her relatives includes her nephew William Temple Franklin, her brother William Franklin and her children. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.B1245 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Scaliger Family. | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Scaliger family papers, fifteenth-nineteenth centuries
| | | | Dates: | 1459-1862 January 25 | | | | Abstract: | The Scaliger Family Papers, when taken together, trace the history of a noble family that was originally from Italy but lived primarily in Agen, France from the mid-1500s through the mid-1800s. Beginning with the patriarch, Julius Caesar Scaliger (1484-1558), a celebrated Italian scholar and physician, the members of the Scaliger family upheld an illustrious reputation over the centuries as scholars, military leaders, and noblemen. Throughout their family’s history, the Scaligers maintained that they were descended from the Della Scallas, Princes of Verona. It is as a result of the necessity to defend this claim as well as later attempts to prove their ties to their noble heritage that this collection of documents has remained so well intact. The Scaliger Family Papers is a collection that encompasses several different kinds of documents that span from 1539 to 1862 including letters, genealogical material, works by members of the Scaliger family, as well as military, legal, and financial documents. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Sca42 | | | | Extent: | 1.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Pasley, Madalene, 1848-1937 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | A selection of British butterflies and moths
| | | | Dates: | 1862 | | | | Abstract: | The youngest of the eleven children of Admiral Thomas Sabine, Baronet Pasley (1804-1884) and his wife Jane Matilda Lily Wynyard, Madalene Pasley was born in 1848, about the time that her father left the Brazilian station to take up duties as superintendent of the Pembroke Dockyard. Madalene married Sir Henry Jenkyns in 1877.
Produced when she was 14 years old, Madelene Pasley's "A Selection of British Butterflies and Moths" is a thin duodecimo volume containing observations on British lepidoptera, illustrated with seventeen watercolor sketches. While it was expected that a genteel young woman would acquire basic artistic skills and might be exposed to at least some facets of the study of the natural sciences, Pasley's book was accomplished with unusual skill. Her comments on the phenology, ethology, ecology, and appearance of butterflies are concise and knowledgeable and suggest that Pasley was a true enthusiast. | | | | Call #: | Mss.595.78.P26 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1974-1990 | | | | Abstract: | The electrophysiologist Sergei Adamovich Kovalev (1932- ) was a prominent Russian dissident and human rights activist. After earning an international reputation for his research on the electrophysiology of myocardial tissues, Kovalev became involved with Andrei Sakharov and others in founding the Initiative Group for the Defense of Human Rights in the USSR, and he was a major figure in the distribution of
The Chronicle of Current Events, a samizdat news letter that became the primary uncensored source for information about the dissident movement. He was arrested by the Soviet authorities in December 1974 and sentenced to seven years in prison and three more in exile. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Kovalev entered politics and won election to the Russian Duma.
The Kovalev Collection consists of files of correspondence, circular letters, and miscellaneous published materials pertaining to the Soviet dissident scientist, Andrei Kovalev. The collection is arranged in two Series of approximately equal size, representing the activities of two of Kovalev's supporters: Paul F. Cranefield of Rockefeller University, who helped mobilize support for Kovalev in the United States, and Silvio Weidmann a physiologist at the University of Bern, who operated in Europe. Both Cranefield and Wiedmann were in regular contact with one another and both worked with professional organizations, with human rights groups such as Amnesty International, and with fellow activists such as Rosa Last. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.35 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Flexner, Simon, 1863-1946 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Simon Flexner Papers
| | | | Dates: | 1891-1946 | | | | Abstract: | Simon Flexner, born in 1863, one of the nation's leading experts in pathology and bacteriology, was most renowned for his research on cerebrospinal meningitis, polio and infantile paralysis. Arguably though, Flexner's stewardship of the Rockefeller Institute was his greatest contribution to medical and scientific research. His rise in the medical community began in the late nineteenth century in Louisville, Kentucky, where despite not having completed even the seventh grade, Flexner taught himself basic bacteriology by conducting experiments at home using a microscope borrowed from the pharmacy where he served as an apprentice. Granted a medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1889, he went on to a pathology fellowship at the newly opened John Hopkins School of Medicine. Within two short years of leaving Louisville, Flexner received an assistant of pathology appointment at Johns Hopkins. It was a quick ascent and the beginning of a long and brilliant career that included a prestigious appointment at the University of Pennsylvania and then a directorship at the new Rockefeller Institute where he realized his lifelong dream of creating a dynamic and productive research laboratory. The Rockefeller Institute became instantly famous worldwide as the preeminent research facility for virology and under Flexner's direction produced invaluable contributions in pathology, bacteriology, and immunology.
This collection does not reflect the early phases of Flexner's career at Johns Hopkins but does document an early interest in meningitis and other infectious diseases with science-related correspondence, laboratory notebooks, and administrative correspondence with the New York City and State Departments of Health. There is abundant material on Flexner's directorship of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, including Flexner's search for staff, an involved process which is detailed in correspondence with the scientists, many of whom became quite famous. Also included is material relating to the other institutions and Rockefeller philanthropies with which Flexner was involved. (Among the most significant correspondence, however, may be that which documents the support of the General Education Board and the Rockefeller Foundation in the development and subsequent reorganization of medical schools following brother Abraham Flexner's scathing report on medical education in the United States and Canada). This collection would be of great interest to anyone interested in the history of bacteriology, histology, and immunology or the general history of modern medicine and philanthropy. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.F365 | | | | Extent: | 115.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1879-1881 | | | | Abstract: | The United States Indian School at Carlisle, Pa., was founded by Gen. Richard Henry Pratt in 1879, and served as a model for government boarding schools for Indians until its closure in 1918. Over 10,000 students enrolled at the Carlisle Training School during its 39 years, where, separated from their native cultures, the students were prepared for work in industrial and manual labor and socialized into "civilized" life. Given new white names to replace their Indian ones, the students were prohibited from speaking their native languages, were instructed in Christianity, and were fed, clothed, and housed under strict military discipline.
The 27 photographs in the Speck-Choate Photograph Collection were taken by J. N. Choate, a local commercial photographer in Carlisle, Pa., and collected by the anthropologist Frank G. Speck. Choate advertised "Photographs of all the Indian Chiefs that have visited the Indian Training School at Carlisle Barracks, also of children in native and school costumes" and were intended to document the benefits of civilization that the school brought to Indians. Typical images include "before and after" shots of students in native dress and school uniforms, the school band, and shots of the students at work in the saddle shop and making shoes. Choate also took a number of images of visiting chiefs in traditional dress, including the Lakota chief Spotted Tail, and the Cheyennes Man on Cloud and Mad Wolf. One photograph depicts Richard Henry Pratt seated with Quaker supporters. Among the tribes represented are the Lakota, Laguna, Cheyenne, Creek, Lipan, and Pueblo. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Sp3c | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Records
| | | | Dates: | 1819-1955 | | | | Abstract: | Intended as a model of Jacksonian penal reform, the Eastern State Penitentiary operated in the Cherry Hill section of Philadelphia between 1829 and 1970. Designed to promote the moral reform of prisoners by imposing a regimen of silent, solitary self-reflection, the penitentiary became the purest example of the "Pennsylvania plan" of "cellular isolation."
The Records of the Eastern State Penitentiary consist of seven bound volumes and a series of miscellaneous records and correspondence that document aspects of life in Jacksonian America's model prison. The collection has been organized into four series: Series I, Bound Volumes; Series II, Miscellaneous Records; Series III, Correspondence of Elizabeth Velora Elwell; and Series IV, Prisoners' Correspondence. The bound volumes contain records of admission for prisoners between 1830 and 1892 (with some gaps), three of which were kept and annotated by the Moral Instructor at the prison, Thomas Larcombe. Larcombe provided interesting comments on the "moral state" of each prisoner, in addition to data on name, age, gender and race, religious affiliation, the charges, sentence, and final disposition. The unbound materials in the collection are diverse, but include an important 70 page manuscript comprising the records of the joint commission charged with investigating management of the prison in 1835, with a partial transcript of testimony, and a series of 29 letters written to or from prisoners at Eastern State, 1845-1871, most unusually the inmate Elizabeth Velora Elwell, writing to her paramour and fellow inmate Albert Green Jackson. | | | | Call #: | Mss.365.P381p | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1933, 1934 | | | | Abstract: | This collection primarily contains Chitimacha material, with some additional Nootka material, originally recorded on 23 wax cylinders by Morris Swadesh in 1933 and 1934. The recordings were transferred circa 1951 to 2 sound tape reels. Due to the poor condition of the original cylinders, the sound quality of the recordings is generally poor. Tape 1 contains elicited sentences, folklore, and autobiographical stories told in Chitimacha by Benjamin Paul, chief from 1903 to 1934, and Delphine Ducloux, the last known speaker of Chitimacha. Recorded in Louisiana in 1933 on 22 wax cylinders. Tape 2 contains elicited sentences, unidentified narrative, and some singing in Nootka by Alex Thomas. Recorded at Port Alberni, British Columbia, on 1 wax cylinder in 1934. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Rec.7 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Reel(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1785 | | | | Abstract: | It is suggested that this manuscript draft "was written for the court of Charles III of Spain and for the plan of a Madrid academy of sciences. In his text, Condorcet tries to sell the idea of a scientific academy and all its advantages, and he treats questions of academic structure and organization at length. Also, what is most important, Condorcet makes the argument for the academy as an independent center of a professional scientific career" (McClellan 1977:241). Contains also an extract from the [minutes?] of the academie des sciences, May 12, 1785, consisting of a report of committee on this article. | | | | Call #: | Mss.506.C75 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |
