| | | | Dates: | 1903-1962 | | | | Abstract: | The French Académie des Sciences organized a total of ten expeditions to observe the transit of Venus in 1882, including parties that set up in Haiti, Martinique, Mexico, Florida, Chile, and Cape Horn. The expedition to Santa Cruz on the Patagonian (Argentine) coast was led by the naval officer Georges-Ernest Fleuriais (1840-1895), director of the Cartography Department of the French Navy. Aboard the ship
Volage, Fleuriais sailed to Argentina and made observations of the transit just before Venus passed its ascending node on December 6, 1882.
The 31 albumen photographs bound into the album titled "Passage de Venus 1882 -- Mission de Santa Cruz (Patagonie)" document a French astronomical expedition of that year to the Argentine coast. Rather than photographs of the transit itself, the album contains images of the members of the expedition, the crew of the
Volage, and the base camp. Only a few images contain captions (written in pencil on the mount). | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.F63 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1910-1972 | | | | Abstract: | The Austrian biologist Paul Kammerer was an outspoken proponent of the theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics (Lamarckism) during the time in which Mendelian theory was becoming deeply entrenched in biology. His major research efforts, straddling the First World War, centered on experiments performed on salamanders and on the midwife toad, and seemed to provide empirical support for a Lamarckian mechanism in evolution. He also developed a monistic "law of seriality," in which he attempted to explain coincidence as the product of a higher order natural law. A Socialist, Kammerer was widely regarded as a brilliant scientist, but for scientific, personal, and political reasons, he engendered as much antagonism as support, preventing him from ever obtaining a regular university appointment. His career ended tragically in allegations of fraud, followed by his suicide.
The Kammerer Papers is comprised of photocopies of materials that document the brief, but controversial career of a non-Darwinian evolutionary biologist. The bulk of the collection consists of photocopies of articles by Kammerer, often from obscure newspapers or periodicals, along with a small number of letters to his friend Hugo Iltis, the geneticist and biographer of Mendel. Nearly all of these pertain to the Kammerer's experiments with amphibians to test Lamarckian inheritance or to his other biological theories. The collection also includes a small number of items dating from after Kammerer's death, but relating to his life and work, including two letters from his former supervisor Hans Przibram, a letter from Hugh Iltis (Hugo's son) to Arthur Koestler and the reply, and a brief biographical reminiscence of Kammerer written by Hugo Iltis. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.K128 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1686-1963 | | | | Abstract: | The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.P31 | | | | Extent: | 19.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Various | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Pennsylvania Stamp Act and Non-Importation Resolutions Collection
| | | | Dates: | 1765-1775 | | | | Abstract: | From the Sugar Act of 1764 through the Tea Act of 1773, the British Parliament imposed a variety of taxes upon their American colonies in an effort to raise revenue to offset the enormous debts incurred during the Seven Years' (French and Indian) War. Far more efficiently than raising revenue, these duties raised the indignation of the colonits, contributing more than their share to the alienation that fueled the independence movement
The two volumes that comprise the Pennsylvania Stamp Act and Non-Importation Resolutions Collection contain 34 manuscript and printed items relating to the political crisis over taxation on goods imported into the American colonies between 1765 and 1773, with a focus on Philadelphia. The first volume is concerned exclusively with agitation over the Stamp Act of 1765 and its repeal, while the second volume relates more specifically to the Non-Importation agreements of the 1760s, the Townshend Duties, and the Tea Act of 1773. Among these are letters of Governor John Penn, correspondence between the Sons of Liberty at Philadelphia and those of New York, 1766, an address of the committee of Boston merchants to a committee of Philadelphia merchants, 11 August 1768. Among the more dramatic letters are those from John Hughes, the would-be Stamp Officer for Pennsylvania who resigned bis commission in the face of public protest, and a seies of threatening letters addressed to James and Drinker, consignees for the sale of tea in Pennsylvania in 1773. | | | | Call #: | Mss.973.2.M31 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1844-1846 | | | | Abstract: | After emigrating from Germany to Philadelphia in 1796, Peter Adolph Grotjahn established himself within the city's mercantile community, trading opportunistically both inland and coastwise as far as the Caribbean. In 1812, he began publishing a commercial newspaper,
Grotjan's Philadelphia Public Sale Reports and he became increasingly active in local Democratic Party politics.
The APS copy of Peter Grotjahn's memoir is a typescript copy of an original volume held at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Written for his grandchildren, the memoir begins with a relatively brief genealogical discussion, but concentrates on his personal and political life and commercial experiences prior to 1817. The last section of the autobiography was completed posthumously from notes, and includes extracts from Grotjahn's diary as late as 1844. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.G913 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Rous, Peyton, 1879-1970 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Peyton Rous Papers
| | | | Dates: | Circa 1917-1970 | | | | Abstract: | For his pioneering research on the link between viruses and cancer, the pathologist Francis Peyton Rous was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1966. Working primarily at the Rockefeller Institute after 1909, Rous first came to notice for his theoretical construction of the first blood bank for use in France during World War I, a plan ultimately implemented by his assistant, Oswald H. Robertson. Subsequently, he left an important imprint on the development of experimental medicine, partly through his own research on the origins of cancer and his administrative activities at the Rockefeller, but also as editor of the
Journal of Experimental Medicine from 1921-1970.
The Rous Papers include correspondence, lectures, articles, reports, laboratory records, reprints, and photographs that document all aspects of the life and work of Peyton Rous. Reflecting his work at the Institute are letters of colleagues, information on assistants, and reports to the directors (1909-1959). Additional material relates to Rous' diverse organizational interests, including the American Cancer Society, Century Association, Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research (at Yale University), Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, Johns Hopkins University, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, New York Academy of Medicine, Royal Society of Medicine Foundation, and Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.R77 | | | | Extent: | 61.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1948-2000 | | | | Abstract: | An electrical engineer and senior editor for
Aviation Week and Space Technology, Philip Klass began investigating UFOs in 1966 after participating in a panel discussion on the subject for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). From that time forward Klass has investigated UFO sightings in an effort to find a credible prosaic explanation, and became one of the most widely recognized UFO "debunkers." A founding member of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), serving on the Executive Council and the UFO subcommittee, Klass has authored seven books and numerous articles on UFOs, including the
Skeptics UFO Newsletter in 1989. In the early 1970s, he became interested in space based weapons, and began collecting material related to the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) for a possible book. The Klass Collection relate to his forty-plus years of investigating UFO sightings, and includes correspondence with many of the leading UFOlogists, both pro and con. The collection contains case files, subject files, and correspondence. In addition, Klass' SDI material is included. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.59 | | | | Extent: | 36.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Bulk, 1940-1976 | | | | Abstract: | A geneticist and educator, Philip Macdonald Sheppard was head of the Department of Genetics at the University of Liverpool from 1963-1976. His research centered on polymorphism, mimicry, blood groups, genetic disease, and speciation, using a variety of subjects, including the gastropod
Cepaea nemoralis, butterflies, and humans. He may be best remembered for his classic study of industrial melanism in the pepper moth
Biston betularia.
The Sheppard Papers (1911-1983; bulk dates, 1940-76) contain correspondence, subject files, notes, and manuscripts that document Sheppard's life as a geneticist. The earliest piece in the collection is a lepidopterist's notebook from 1911, possibly J. R. Hobhouse's, however the bulk dates from 1940 to 1976, Sheppard's most productive and influential years. Among other things, these materials document Sheppard's research on the Scarlet Tiger moth, swallowtail butterflies, and ABO blood groups in humans, as well as his position as head of the Department of Genetics at the University of Liverpool. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.65 | | | | Extent: | 16.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1802-1803 | | | | Abstract: | A merchant and member of the Society of Friends, Pim Nevins (1756-1833) lived most of his life in the English midlands. Recorded in
Pigot's Directory of 1834 as a member of the gentry resident in Hunslet Lane, Leeds, Nevins was a woollen cloth manufacturer, finisher, and merchant whose operations were located at Larchfield Mill, near Huddersfield.
During a voyage to visit Friends' meetings in the United States in 1802-1803, Pim Nevins kept a journal to record his thoughts and experiences. In presenting a copy of his diary to his children, he wrote: "some parts [of the diary] wch. being by way of memorandum to assist my memory will of course be no ways interesting to you; other parts being fill'd with the effusions of my own thoughts, will I fear be dry to you unless your minds should in some measure be dip'd into the like state with mine when influencing my pen; some other parts may entertain you." The journal includes a mixture of description of the cities, towns and landscape through which Nevins passed and accounts of his visits with Friends in New York city, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington, Alexandria, Bethlehem, Pa., Easton, Pa., the Pocono Mountains, northern New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J., and Trenton, N.J. It also includes a delicate watercolor drawing of the Delaware Water Gap. | | | | Call #: | Mss.917.3.N41 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |
