| | | | Dates: | Circa 1888-1966 | | | | Abstract: | A collection of letters (family and professional), notebooks, diaries, lectures, articles, and photographs, of Smith, a noted American geographer who influenced the teaching of geography after 1920 through his many elementary texts. There is much material relating to these writings. His contributions to the rise of human geography and the related areas of conservation and ecology, are documented. His study in Europe under Friedrich Ratzel, at Leipzig in 1901-1912, is touched on in his journal for those years; included are many interesting observations on German university life. There is also much material on his nursery business in Virginia. Organizational files are numerous, e.g. Association of American Geographers, Columbia University, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Much of the correspondence is limited to only a few letters from each correspondent. Among the names included are: Willard G. Bixby, Isaiah Bowman, John W. Hershey, Emory R. Johnson, Walter C. Lowdermilk (of particular note is his 1926 paper, written while at the University of Nanking, "Forest Conservation in Shansi, China"), and Lewis Mumford. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Sm59 | | | | Extent: | 11.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor, Me.) | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Jackson Laboratory Oral History Collection
| | | | Dates: | 1986 | | | | Abstract: | In 1929, the geneticist C. C. Little founded the Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, a major center for the study of mammalian genetics, cancer, and related areas in basic biomedical research. An independent institution, the Lab has maintained a consistent scientific reputation both as a supplier of inbred strains of mice for genetic and biomedical research and for the scientific achievements of its researchers.
Conducted by Susan Mehrtens in 1986, the Oral History Collection includes transcripts of extensive interviews with fifty scientists, administrators, and staff members of the Jackson Laboratory. At greater or lesser length depending on the subject, the interviews provide a detailed picture of the operations and administration at the laboratory, the culture of research, the sometimes contentious staff relations, and the research itself. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.53 | | | | Extent: | 1.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1765-1798 | | | | Abstract: | Jacob Hiltzheimer, farmer and assemblyman, emigrated from Germany to Philadelphia in 1748 and lead a moderately active political and social life. He was a successful farmer and raised select livestock in the city of Philadelphia. He also boarded horses including those of John Penn and George Washington. He served in the Pennsylvania Assembly for 11 consecutive years beginning in 1786. | | | | Dates: | 1749-1898 | | | | Abstract: | The James S. and Frances M. Bradford Collection contains a wealth of letters to and from Polly Stevenson Hewson, intimate friend of Benjamin Franklin. At the heart of the collection are approximately 40 letters from Mary Stevenson to Franklin with a smaller number in return. Friendly, increasingly intimate, these provide a glimpse of the domestic life of Franklin and his warm personal relations with the Stevensons and Hewsons. Among the noteworthy individual items is the manuscript "Craven Street Gazette" (Sept. 22-26, 1770), the mock newspaper Franklin produced while in London. The collection also contains a series of unrelated miscellaneous manuscripts that includes correspondence from William Bradford, Patrick Henry, and George Washington. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.F85.bra | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1784-1814 | | | | Abstract: | Jane Aitken (1764-1832) is a significant historical figure for several reasons. One of the first American female printers, Jane Aitken was also a bookseller, bookbinder, businesswoman, and employer during the early nineteenth century, a time when the independence of women was actively discouraged. There is a dearth of personal information about Jane Aitken, an unfortunate fact that is reflected in her surviving papers.
This small collection, 145 items, is representative of her severely compromised financial situation and her constant failed efforts to rectify the situation. Her correspondence consists primarily of appeals to John Vaughan, a member and librarian of the American Philosophical Society, for loans. Vaughan was evidently a reliable and sympathetic supporter. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Ai9 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1865 | | | | Abstract: | From 1856 to 1868, George Tyson was a partner of Russell and Company, a firm that had engaged in the tea and opium trade, and the most powerful American commercial house in China. Originally from Boston, Tyson is credited with helping to introduce steamboats to the Yangtze River, and like John Murray Forbes, his better-known predecessor in Russell and Co., when he returned to the United States he joined the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, eventually rising to become Director and General Auditor.
Prior to October 1865, Tyson collected these 300 exquisitely detailed watercolors of Japanese plants painted by local artists in Nagasaki. Each watercolor is identified by name and month of blooming, some with brief additional descriptive notes. An index at the front of the volume provides transliterations of the Japanese names. | | | | Call #: | Mss.581.952.J27 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Bulk, 1760-1816 | | | | Abstract: | Jasper Yeates (1745-1817) was a lawyer and Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice, one of the state's most successful colonial-era legal practitioners. After moving to Lancaster County in 1765, he became active in colonial and early federal affairs, first by supporting the Revolutionary struggle and later by serving as one of Lancaster's delegates to the State Convention of 1787, which ratified the U.S. Constitution. The Jasper Yeates Papers (1728-1910, bulk 1760-1816) consist mainly of correspondence and business and court/legal records related to the Yeates family. The bulk of this three linear foot collection reflect Yeates’ personal life as husband, father, son, and friend, as well as his professional life as lawyer and judge in Pennsylvania; much of the material dated after Yeates’ death was created by children and/or grandchildren. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.151 | | | | Extent: | 3.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Mason, John Alden, 1885-1967 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | John Alden Mason Papers
| | | | Dates: | 1904-1967 | | | | Abstract: | An archaeological anthropologist and linguist, John Alden Mason spent the majority of his career at the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Penn in 1907, Mason received a doctorate at Berkeley (1911) for his ethnographic work on the Salinan Indians of California, but his diverse interests in later years ran the gamut from Puerto Rican folklore to Piman languages and cultures (including Pima, Papago, Pima Bajo, Northern and Southern Tepehuan, and Tepecano), Mayan, Aztec, and Incan archaeology, and the languages of South American Indians. Mason was curator of the University Museum at Penn from 1926 until his retirement in 1958.
The Mason Papers include both in-coming and outgoing correspondence, linguistic material, notes, and photographs relating to Mason's work in the southwestern U.S., northern Mexico, and South America. Centered on the years after Mason's return to Philadelphia in 1926, the collection covers all aspects of Mason's professional life, from reports on field work to answering casual questions referred to him through the University Museum to data and analyses on Piman and other languages. The collection also contains voluminous files relating to the Mason's editorship of the
American Anthropologist (bulk: 1945-1948). Of special note are a series of class notes (1908-1910) kept by Mason for course work in ethnology, archaeology, and linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania under Edward Sapir and Frank Speck. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.M384 | | | | Extent: | 26.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1894-2008 | | | | Abstract: | There are correspondence, notebooks, reports, recordings, etc. of this award-winning physicist and pioneer theorist on the existence of black holes. Herzfeld's student at Johns Hopkins, he studied nuclear fission with Bohr. The twenty-eight volumes of notebooks, which are his daily record of calculations, meetings attended and conversations held about his work, are of primary significance. They cover physics, nucleonics, quantum electrodynamics, and relativity (18 vols. total). The correspondence contains many personal evaluations of scientists (subject to restrictions on use), as well as Wheeler's contributions to promoting physics and scientific education and training in general. There are important series relating to his participation in the 1950s on the Committee on Scientific and Technical Personnel of NATO, headed by Senator Henry M. Jackson, and his organizational work on the Joint Committee of the American Physical Society and the American Philosophical Society on the History of Theoretical Physics in the Twentieth Century. | | Creator: | Belling, John, 1866-1933 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | John Belling Collection
| | | | Dates: | 1928-1933 | | | | Abstract: | The cytogeneticist John Belling (1866-1933) developed the iron-acetocarmine staining technique, which facilitated detailed study of chromosomal structures. In his work with Arthur F. Blakeslee at Cold Spring Harbor on
Datura (1920-1927) and at the University of California, Berkeley (1928-1933) on lilies, hyacinths, and other plants, Belling made accurate estimates of chromosomal numbers, helped to demonstrate the interchange of segments between non-homologous chromosomes, and proposed that the chromomeres (small condensations of stain that appeared along the length of chromosomes) represented individual, physical genes. Although he was a gifted technician and insightful cytologist, his career was hampered by mental instability and curtailed by frequent hospitalizations before his sudden death in 1933.
The Belling Collection consists of four photograph albums, 38 glass slides and approximately 75 glass negatives and positive prints of chromosome preparations made by Belling, primarily during the years at Berkeley, along with an annotated bibliographic card file. The images in the albums are fully identified, but most of the glass slides are not. | | | | Call #: | Mss.581.35.B41 | | | | Extent: | 1.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1889-1912 | | | | Abstract: | Born in Schiffdorf (near Bremerhafen), John Bohlen became one of Philadelphia's most prominent merchants at the turn of the nineteenth century. Running a profitable concern in partnership with his brother Bohl (1754-1836), John Bohlen imported commodities from their native Holland. Thanks to an insatiable American thirst for gin, Bohlen amassed an immense fortune that enabled him to travel in the same social circles as Stephen Girard and others among the mercantile elite and to win a spot in 1816 as one of the Directors of the Bank of the United States. By the time of his death, he was one of only eleven Philadelphians whose personal estates exceeded one million dollars in value.
The Bohlen Collection contains a scant ten letters that appear to have been retained, as much as anything, for their autograph interest. Although they shed relatively little light on the life of John Bohlen, they do offer interesting glimpses into the personalities of Bohlen's famous correspondents, including Stephen Girard, Francis Scott Key, Meriwether Lewis, Virgil Maxcy, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Timothy Pickering. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.B63 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1908-1976 | | | | Abstract: | After receiving his doctorate from Harvard in 1923, the physicist John Clarke Slater did postgraduate work at Cambridge University and on the continent working n quantum theory with both Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. Slater was appointed to the head of the department of physics at MIT in 1930, which he and Karl Compton worked effectively to transform into one of international stature. His own work on the electromagnetic theory of microwaves was fundamental to the development of radar systems. During the Second World War, he was affiliated with the radiation laboratory and after he helped found the solid state and molecular theory group, the interdisciplinary Center for Materials Science and Engineering, the Research Laboratory of Electronics, and the Laboratory for Nuclear Science. After his retirement from MIT in 1966, Slater moved to the University of Florida, remaining active until his death in 1976.
The Slater Papers contains a wealth of information on the development of physics at MIT, as well as Slater's post-1966 work at the University of Florida. There are about 133 (7 linear ft.) research notebooks, 1944-1976, and a long series (30 linear ft.) of folders, containing lectures, scientific notes, drafts of manuscripts and papers, correspondence during his collaboration with the Los Alamos Labs, 1966-1970, and extensive correspondence relating to the National Academy of Science. Information about American-Swedish exchange in quantum science is located in the correspondence with Per-Olov Löwdin. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.SL2p | | | | Extent: | 81.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1821-1845 | | | | Abstract: | John James Audubon (1785-1851), the American Woodsman, is a legendary naturalist and bird artist. His technique of painting North American birds dramatically as they appeared in their natural habitat was a major contribution to the emerging discipline of ornithology in the nineteenth century. His masterpiece,
The Birds of America (1827-1838), elephant folio, was followed by a companion text edition,
Ornithological Biography (1831-1849), a smaller octavo edition of
Birds (1840-1844) and
The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, published posthumously.
This collection of original letters of publication information, ornithology, and some personal notes was sent primarily to Lucy Bakewell Audubon, his wife, from 1826-1834, and to Victor Gifford Audubon, his son, from 1833-1834, 1840-1844, with some sporadic contact with both between 1836-1839. Items in the collection relate to Audubon's Florida, Great Egg Harbor, and Great Pine Forest expeditions but not to his final expedition up the Missouri River. Of particular note, letters of 1833 and 1834 contain references to his response to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia president George Ord's attacks on his credibility. A partial journal entry from New Orleans in 1821 and a few letters to other correspondents, including John Bachman, round out the material. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Au25 | | | | Extent: | 0.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1768-1781 | | | | Abstract: | Having made his fortune as a goldsmith and silversmith, John Leacock (1729-1802) became one of Philadelphia's most energetic entrepreneurs in viticulture and a playwright and parodist in the cause of American Independence.
Despite bearing the title, "Observations, Experiments etc. extracted from the
Philosophical Transactions respecting farming, gardening, etc.," the notebook kept by the silversmith, viticulturist, and writer, John Leacock, is actually a combination of commonplace book, notebook, and receipt book. Consisting of 58 folio pages, the book contains a hodgepodge of entries reflecting Leacock's varied interests from 1768 through at least 1781, including not only material copied from other sources on viticulture, agriculture, engraving and etching, but medicinal and culinary receipts and two original poems, a "Song [of] the Stamp Act" and "A parody on the Tempest, by R. H. Esq." It also mentions diet drinks made by James Logan and Cadwallader Evans. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.L463 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1950-1972 | | | | Abstract: | The educator and linguist John Maurice Hohlfeld received his doctorate in education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1950 for a dissertation focused on the teaching of foreign languages. Throughout his career as professor of linguistics at the Kennedy School of Missions at the Hartford Theological Seminary, Hohlfeld maintained an interest in the teaching of languages, and during the 1960s, he developed an interest in the linguistics of jokes and humor.
The Hohlfeld Papers consist of a small assemblage of materials related to the linguistic interests and teaching of John Maurice Hohlfeld. The most valuable materials in the collection are an assortment of student papers regarding the pedagogical materials used in teaching missionaries, including materials on three African languages, Fulani, Senoufo, and Bemba, as well as Machiguenga and Asmat. The collection also includes outlines and background materials for two works by Hohlfeld that never appeared in print, "Linguistic Structure of Jokes" and "Introduction to Applied Linguistics." The former consists of numerous jokes and comics culled by Hohlfeld from newspapers and the popular media for their linguistic implications. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.46 | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1768 - Circa 1936 | | | | Abstract: | The collection of about 850 items covers the period from 1782 to c. 1936, with the bulk dating to the 1780s to 1840s. The collection is divided into four series. Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Series IV consists of correspondence between Vaughan and the DuPont Co. for which he served as agent (B V462.4; photocopies of 73 letters). | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.V462 | | | | Extent: | 5.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Tukey, John Wilder, 1915- | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | John W. Tukey Papers
| | | | Dates: | 1937-2000 | | | | Abstract: | One of the most influential statisticians of the twentieth century, John Wilder Tukey (1915-2000) played a key role in both the development and study of statistics. Upon receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1939 from Brown University, he joined the faculty at Princeton; in 1945, he also began work at Bell Laboratories. Equally committed to both Princeton and Bell Labs, Tukey chose to work concurrently at both institutions. He was also a consultant for many companies, such as Merck and Company, Xerox Corporation, and the Educational Testing Service, and was a frequent advisor to the government for such programs as the US Census. From 1960 to 1980 he led the statistical component of NBC’s election night projections. Among other projects Tukey analyzed Alfred Kinsey's research and examined data on ozone depletion. Tukey made many important contributions to the field of statistics, such as work in time series analysis, exploratory data analysis, and multiple comparisons. Through his work, Tukey developed statistical applications including the Box-and-Whisker Plot, the Stem-and-Leaf Diagram, Cooley-Tukey Fast Fourier Transforms, Tukey’s Paired Comparisons and citation and permutated indices. Tukey's influence extends beyond statistics to everyday language: he was the first to use the word "software" in print and coined words such as "bit" and "linear programming." A prolific writer, John W. Tukey penned more than 500 technical papers and reports and published, among numerous other works. His collected papers amount to eight volumes of work.
The Tukey Papers provides a comprehensive perspective into Tukey’s professional activities from his days as a graduate student until his death in 2002. Among the material is his correspondence and his published and unpublished works. There is abundant material from Tukey’s long careers at Bell Laboratories and Princeton University, including extensive lecture notes and syllabi. Also included are copious materials relating to his professional activities with such agencies as the National Research Council, the Army Records Office, Xerox PARC, Merck and Company, the President’s Science Advisory Committee, and the National Academy of Sciences. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.117 | | | | Extent: | 169.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1839-1891 | | | | Abstract: | In many ways, Jonathan Couch was a prototype of the Victorian provincial naturalist, a trained physician whose eclectic, but intensely local interests ran from the life sciences to geology, Cornish folk beliefs, and local history. His major works included a three-volume translation of
Pliny's Natural History (London, 1847-1849) published by the Wernerian Club of London,
The History of Polperro (Truro, 1871), and the exhaustive four-volume
A History of the Fishes of the British Islands (London, 1862-1868).
The remnants of a wide-ranging mind, the Couch Papers contain a sampling of correspondence, rough drafts of articles, and notes on a variety of topics of interest to the Cornish naturalist and antiquarian, Jonathan Couch. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Couch's translation of Pliny's Natural History, published by the Wernerian Club of London between 1847 and 1849. The notes are highly diverse, but include some systematic descriptions of fishes, probably used in his
A History of the Fishes of the British Islands and notes Cornish folk beliefs. Of particular interest are his "Notes connected with instinct and reason" and three manuscripts relating to evolutionism: "Enquiry into the circumstances...," "On the history and development of man," and "The Natural History of the Creation of the World, with its changes to the subsidence of the flood and Noah." | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.C831 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Legaux, Peter,1748-1827. | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Journal of the Vine Company of Pennsylvania
| | | | Dates: | 1803-1827 | | | | Abstract: | Initially proposed by Peter Legaux at a meeting of the American Philosophical Society in 1793, the Vine Company of Pennsylvania was a stock company that encouraged the domestic production of grapes, wines, and brandy, and dissemination of knowledge about viticulture. After its incorporation in 1802, the Company operated vineyards on Legaux's farm at Spring Mill, 13 miles northwest of Philadelphia, until it failed in 1822. The three volumes of Journals of the Vine Company of Pennsylvania record the daily operations of America's first commercial vineyard bewteeen 1803 and 1814. Kept by the superintendent, Peter Legaux, the journals provide careful records of weather, planting, harvesting and other field work, as well as some of the doings of the officers and shareholders of the Company. The fourth volume is essentially a weather diary kept by Legaux at Spring Mill from 1822 until his death in 1827. The last volume of Vine Company records covering the last eight years of its operation, 1814-1822, has been lost. | | | | Call #: | Mss.974.8.L52 | | | | Extent: | 4.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Andrews, Emma B., 1837-1922 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | A Journal on the Bedawin
| | | | Dates: | 1889-1913 | | | | Abstract: | A wealthy retired businessman and art collector from New York and Newport, R.I., Theodore M. Davis financed a series of archeological excavations in Egypt between 1889 and 1912. Avid, but not necessarily disciplined in his approach, he supported a remarkably productive series of excavations at Thebes and, in the work for which he is best remembered, in the Valley of the Kings. On many of these expeditions, Davis was accompanied by his relative, Emma B. Andrews.
The diary that Andrews kept during these expeditions is valuable on two scores. First, at its best, it provides a literate and often detailed record of an adventurous American woman traveling in fin de siecle Egypt and (to a lesser degree) Italy and her encounters with life in the colonial British settlements along the Nile. Second, it provides some important details on the appearance of tombs in the Valley of the Kings as they were first unearthed, with interesting comments upon Davis and a number of his fellow Egyptologists. | | | | Call #: | Mss.916.2.An2 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1826-1898 | | | | Abstract: | After a brief career in the Congregational church, J. Peter Lesley (1819-1903) left the ministry in 1852 to work full-time as a geologist. Having gained experience in structural geology and stratigraphy with the First Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1836-1842), Lesley became an expert in the geology of coal, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and other corporations and conducting some of the first systematic studies of the state's hydrocarbon resources. A long-time professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he was elected to the APS in 1856, serving variously as its librarian, secretary, and vice president, and he was selected as Director of the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1875-1889).
The Lesley Papers include letters to and from Peter Lesley and his wife, Susan on geology, coal and iron mining, abolition, educational reform, organized charity, and Unitarianism. The collection offers important insight into academic and applied geology in late 19th century Pennsylvania, the development of the coal and iron industries, as well as into the Lesleys' progressive social and intellectual milieu. It is divided into three series: Lesley's general correspondence, his correspondence with his brother Joseph, and microfilms of Lesley's research notes. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.L56 | | | | Extent: | 7.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |
