| | Creator: | Bellenger, Joseph M. | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Instruction sur la langue Mickmaque
| | | | Dates: | Circa 1814 | | | | Abstract: | From 1735 to 1762, Antoine-Simon Maillard (d.1762) was a Catholic missionary to the Micmac Indians at Restigouche on the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec. Abbé Maillard was the first Frenchman to master the Micmac language, and he collected extensive grammatical and linguistic notes which were edited, arranged, and published by Rev. Joseph M. Bellenger in the 19th century.
The "Instructions sue la langue Mickmaque" is a French-language instructional manual on the grammar of the Micmac language, probably compiled by Rev. Joseph M. Bellenger, ca.1814. The manuscript (identified as Phillips 12343) is based on the grammar of Abbé Maillard, and is arranged on a Latin model. It includes general comments on the structure of the language, orthography, nouns, pronouns, and numerals, with more extensive commentary on verb conjugation. The manuscript appears to be incomplete, ending with the section heading "Verbes réciproque." | | | | Call #: | Mss.497.2.In75 | | | | Extent: | 0.1 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1889-1989 | | | | Abstract: | To promote the science of physiology and the exchange of ideas, the first congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) was held in Basle, Switzerland, in 1889, and congresses have been held every three years since. The Union was incorporated at Washington, D.C., in 1953.
The bulk of the Records of the IUPS relate to the International Congresses. Although representation is uneven, with a gap between 1907-1920, the records include programs, lists of members, abstracts of communications, and photographs, with more substantial documentation for meetings held in the United States. The collection also includes some general correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports of the Secretary, Executive Committee and Council correspondence, records relating to budgets, record books, and photographs. | | | | Call #: | Mss.610.6.In82 | | | | Extent: | 27.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Circa 1820-1925 | | | | Abstract: | These papers reflect Isaac Hays' interests and activities in the medical profession and as an editor. His interest in paleontology, especially in the controversy with G. W. Featherstonhaugh, is also represented. There is one separate volume (77 letters) containing correspondence about natural history and naturalists, written to Hays by C. L. Bonaparte, George Ord, Thomas Say, and Charles A. Lesueur. The correspondence in the larger collection, however, contains much material on the
American Journal of the Medical Sciences, particularly illuminated in the correspondence with John D. Godman. The I. Minis Hays material consists of letters from doctors, relating to medicine and medical publications and editing, as well as medical organizations. Most significant of the correspondence is that with John Shaw Billings (ca. 60 letters). | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.H334 | | | | Extent: | 1.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Jackson, Isaac | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Isaac Jackson Letterbooks
| | | | Dates: | 1839-1843 | | | | Abstract: | Isaac Jackson managed several estates in northern Jamaica during the years of transition from slavery to free labor. Based in Hanover Parish, County of Cornwall, Jackson oversaw the interests of as many as a dozen estates engaged in the production of sugar and other crops, rum, and cattle during the 1830s and 1840s.
Jackson's letterbooks contain approximately 825 letters pertaining to the daily management of Jamaican plantations. Beginning just a year after the end of apprenticeship, the mostly formulaic letters addressed to absentee British landowners, their attorneys, ship captains, and other estate managers touch on sugar and rum production and crop yields and cattle husbandry, but more importantly, they map out the course of the hard-edged negotiations between landowners and laborers as they struggled to shape the new labor regime. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.J134 | | | | Extent: | 3.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |
