| | | | Dates: | 1925-1994 | | | | Abstract: | H. (Horton) Corwin Hinshaw was a physician and pulmonary specialist; the high point of his career was his work with streptomycin, the first anti-microbial drug developed after penicillin. Streptomycin has proven to be effective in combating a variety of bacterial infections, including those that are penicillin-resistant. It was also the first drug used to treat tuberculosis successfully, although the high rate of mutation in the tuberculosis baccilli causes it to build up a resistance to the drug over time. Hinshaw and his collaborator, William H. Feldman, were nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1952, but lost out to their colleague, Selman A. Waksman, who first extracted streptomycin in the laboratory. Hinshaw subsequently had a long and distinguished career in medical research, private practice, teaching, and writing. The H. Corwin Hinshaw Papers (1925-1993) contain correspondence, research notes, and manuscripts of published and unpublished works by Hinshaw and his colleagues, as well as published papers by Hinshaw and his colleagues, particularly William H. Feldman. Also included are several videotapes of expert witness testimony and an audiotape of reminiscences. The collection covers much of Hinshaw's career, but is most particularly focused on the development of streptomycin and the treatment of tuberculosis. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.107 | | | | Extent: | 3.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1952-1957 | | | | Abstract: | The Santa Fe Fiesta and the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial are two of the major cultural events held annually in New Mexico, both involving substantial participation by the Indian population of the state and region. The older of these, the Fiesta, originated in 1712 when the Spanish governor, the Marqués of Pañuela, set aside a day in September to commemorate the reconquest of the province by Don Diego de Vargas. Since 1919, the festival has been held annually and has increasingly become a celebration of traditional New Mexican culture and the varied ethnicities of its population. The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial of Gallup, New Mexico, was organized by local businessmen and Indian traders in 1922 for "the encouragement of Indian arts and crafts and the education of whites to the beauties of Indian life" and for the "perpetuation of the dances, traditions and customs of Indian life."
The H. O. Hanson Photograph Collection contains 34 large format (8x10") black and white prints, including sixteen images of the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial at Gallup, 1953 and 1954, four images of the Jemez Pueblo, and nine images of the Santa Fe Fiesta, 1952 and 1953. Hanson has not been further identified, but he may have worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.H198 | | | | Extent: | 0.1 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Gadow, Hans, 1855-1928 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Hans Gadow Papers
| | | | Dates: | 1907-1914 | | | | Abstract: | A prolific and diverse scholar, Hans Friedrich Gadow (1855-1928), wrote on such topics as birds, Mexican peoples and animals, reptiles, and other vertebrates. Born in Germany in 1855, Gadow studied anatomy with Ernst Haeckel in Germany before moving to England, where his research on avian anatomy and systematics had broad influence. He was Curator of the Stricklandian Collections at Cambridge University and a Reader on the morphology of vertebrates. The Gadow Papers consists of twenty letters (1907-1914) from Hans Gadow to William Morris Colles and to Colles' firm 'Author's Syndicate' that discuss Gadow's work "Through Southern Mexico" (1908). Colles was an agent who helped writers to publish their work. The early letters deal with editorial changes to the book, the later letters are about A & C Black, a publishing firm, which Gadow believed had not properly compensated him for his contributions to "The Lost Link," a book he co-authored with Ernst Haeckel. Most of the letters are very brief and do not discuss personal matters in Gadow's life nor do they contain much information on Gadow's scholarly work, except for references to the editorial process. Similarly, they provide no information on Gadow's travels to Mexico. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.G11 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1724-1965 | | | | Abstract: | This is a collection of letters, letterbooks, account books, scrapbooks, etc., concerning the families of Robert Hare and Thomas Willing. The letters and other documents include early family material, as well as documents written by numerous family relations, and some obviously only collected by them. The Willing family letters (1744-1901) are diverse, concerning family matters, business, society, comments on the Civil War, etc. There are numerous letters from Thomas Willing, many concerning his banking career, as President of the Bank of North America and later at the first Bank of the U.S. The Hare family letters (1724-1965) are more extensive and diverse, including much on travel in the U.S. and elsewhere. There is a letter from Robert Hare Jr. concerning steam engines, and letters from Horace Binney Hare concerning his education at Harvard, 1860, his trip to San Francisco and the west, 1862, and numerous letters written while a soldier in the Civil War. There are many letters from Horace Binney (1780-1875, DAB) to his daughter Esther, who was married to John Innes Clark Hare (1816-1905, DAB), concerning family travel and court cases. There are also letters from outside the family, such as those from Dorothea L. Dix. The bound volumes include, among others: Robert Hare letterbooks (1824-1825, 1841-1857), estate records, and laboratory expense accounts (1818-1860); G. H. Hare's journal or log of cruises aboard the U.S. United States (1841) and U.S. Flint (1845); Horace Binney Hare's 1862 journal of his trip to San Francisco. There are account books and accounts (1754-1795) kept by Thomas Willing; accounts of the controversy over the estate of John Innes Clark; and records of the First Colored Wesley Methodist Church of Philadelphia (receipt book, 1820-1848; minute book, 1827-1844). There are also Philadelphia court records, and minutes of the Common Council of the city, 1832. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.104 | | | | Extent: | 52.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1918-1927 | | | | Abstract: | An expert in tropical botany, Harley Harris Bartlett (1886-1960) spent the majority of career in the Department of Botany and Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan. He traveled widely in tropical Asia and the Americas collecting plants and looking for sources for rubber. While employed by the U.S. Rubber Company to collect in Asahan, in northeastern Sumatra in 1918 and 1927, Bartlett learned the Batak language and made ethnographic, ethnobotanical, and linguistic observations that became the basis for a number of articles.
The Bartlett Batak Collection consists of over 600 bamboo "sticks" collected by Bartlett in 1918 and 1927. Written by informants at Bartlett's request, the bamboo sections are inscribed in Batak, an Austronesian language written in a phonetic alphabet. They include traditional writing- and reading-manuals, short poems, letters, and magical formulae and incantations. | | | | Call #: | Mss.499.211.B28 | | | | Extent: | 8.0 Cubic feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1827-1844 | | | | Abstract: | Harriet Verena Evans was born in Lancaster, Pa., on April 28, 1782, the daughter of John and Sarah Musser. On May 21, 1807, Harriet married Cadwalader Evans (1762-1841), a former surveyor who went on to a distinguished career in politics, as one of the directors of the Bank of the United States, a promoter of the Schuylkill Canal, and president of the Schuylkill Navigation Company. The couple had nine children, including a set of twins.
The diary of Harriet Verena Evans is an unusual example of a woman's spiritual diary from early national Philadelphia. Beginning on her 46th birthday in 1827, the same day her seventeen year-old son John died, Evans made sporadic entries in her diary for seventeen years, marking birthdays, holidays, special events, and anniversaries of various kinds. Fixated upon praying (or fretting) over her spiritual state and future, Evans continued to mourn over John's loss for many years, remembering him regularly on the date of his birth, death, and burial. She was also particularly prone to composing (or copying) religious poetry, and in sections, the diary verges on a poetical commonplace book. Other entries reveal Evans' concern for her other children, three of whom were students at the University of Pennsylvania, and on July 25, 1832, she made a particularly long entry discussing the arrival of the cholera in Philadelphia. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Ev5 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Bulk, 1930-1934 | | | | Abstract: | A student of Edward Sapir's at the University of Chicago (PhD, 1931), Harry Hoijer began his career in linguistics with intensive fieldwork on the Coahuiltecan language, Tonkawa, though shortly thereafter he turned to an intensive study of Athapaskan, including several Apache languages, Navajo, Sarsi, and Galice. Employed as an instructor at the University of Chicago for several years, Hoijer moved to the new Department of Anthropology at UCLA in 1940, where he remained until his retirement.
The Hoijer Collection contains textual materials representing comparative linguistic studies of Athapascan languages, including Carrier, Chipewyan, Galice, Navajo, Sarsi, and five Apache languages and dialects, (Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Mescalero, Lipan, and San Carlos). The collection also includes four audio recordings of Loucheux (Kutchin, Gwich'in), and copies of texts collected by Hoijer from colleagues Berard Haile, Diamond Jenness, David Mandelbaum, Chic Sandoval, and Edward Sapir. | | | | Call #: | Mss.497.3.H68 | | | | Extent: | 4.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1920-1975 | | | | Abstract: | An administrator and humanist, Henry Allen Moe (1894-1975) was the first director of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was a president of the American Philosophical Society from 1959 to 1970. The Moe Papers are a vast and rich resource documenting all phases of Moe's career, but are also a major source of information on twentieth-century philanthropic organizations. As the first Secretary, then Administrator, and finally President of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (ca. 1925-1963), Moe made contact with the influential and the aspiring in the worlds of banking, finance, the arts, and sciences. This collection is particularly strong in correspondence and information relating to Latin America, much of it generated through Moe's oversight of the Guggenheim's Latin America Fund and by Moe's otherwise keen interest in the region. This material is diverse, ranging from material on agriculture (see Escuela Agricola Panamericana, 15 boxes) and Peruvian archaeology (see Alfred Kroeber's detailed report) to many folders of correspondence and grant reports from artists, writers, and politicians of South and Central America. Moe served as trustee, officer, and committee member of over thirty private foundations, many of which are well represented in the collection by yearly reports and grant applications, among other types of records. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.M722 | | | | Extent: | 120.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1859-1942 | | | | Abstract: | One of the founding figures of American parasitology, Henry Baldwin Ward was a professor of zoology at the Universities of Nebraska (1893-1909) and Illinois (1909-1933). The first American to offer a laboratory course in parasitology and the first to offer graduate instruction in the field, Ward's research interests touched on the medical aspects of parasitology, fish parasitology and ichthyology, fresh water biology, and ecology.
The Ward Papers include just under 2 linear feet of professional correspondence dating primarily between the period of Ward's graduate education in Germany in the late 1880s until the time of his retirement in 1933, dealing primarily with parasitological and ichthyological research, the exchange of specimens and publications, and the
Journal of Parasitology. Some files include retained copies of letters written by Ward to accompany the letters received. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.41 | | | | Extent: | 1.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1885-1987 | | | | Abstract: | Best known as author of the "Smyth Report," the official government report on the development of the atomic bomb, Henry DeWolf Smyth had a long and varied career as a physicist, diplomat, instructor, policy maker, and administrator. Taking leave from his position with the Physics Department at Princeton, Smyth began work on the Uranium committee of the National Defense Research Committee in 1940, serving as a consultant on the Manhattan Project from 1943-1945. Although he returned to Princeton after the war, Smyth left academia to become Commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) from 1949 to 1954, and he subsequently served as U.S. Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), from 1961 to 1970.
The Smyth Papers (1885-1987) contain correspondence, subject files, speeches, manuscripts of unpublished and published works, reprints and printed publications, scientific class notes and papers, newspaper clippings, photographs, and memorabilia which document Smyth's career as a physicist and statesman. The bulk of the collection dates from approximately 1944 to 1970, the most active and influential years of his career, providing good documentation of his work on the Manhattan Project and the Smyth Report, and his involvement with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Commission. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.15 | | | | Extent: | 52.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1884-1918 | | | | Abstract: | One of Philadelphia's most recognized geographers at the turn of the twentieth century, Henry Grier Bryant (1859-1932) was an explorer, traveler, and writer known for an avid interest in the arctic. His financial independence enabled Bryant to devote his life to expanding geographic knowledge, as an officer of the Geographic Society of Philadelphia and Alpine Club of America, and as an explorer and traveler to Labrador, Greenland, the Canadian Rockies, South America, and southern and southeast Asia.
The Bryant Letterbooks include an important slice of outgoing correspondence from the geographer and explorer, Henry G. Bryant, documenting his interest in geography and exploration. The four volumes consist of letterpress copies of outgoing correspondence (1884-1890, 1899-1902, 1902-1903, and 1913-1918) concerning personal and financial matters as well as business conducted as an officer of the Geographical Society of Philadelphia and Alpine Club of America. The collection also includes three folders of correspondence addressed to Bryant, 1886-1911, mostly pertaining to the Alpine Club. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.38 | | | | Extent: | 0.75 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1903-1918 | | | | Abstract: | Henry Howard Houston II (1895-1918) was the son of a prominent Philadelphia family, the Houstons. He enjoyed a privileged upbringing, graduating from Chestnut Hill Academy in 1912 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1916. Upon his graduation date, he enlisted in Battery C of the First Field Artillery, Pennsylvania National Guard, and was sent to the Texas and New Mexico borders in response to Pancho Villa's raids from Mexico. In January 1917, he volunteered with the American Field Ambulance Service in France during World War I, stationed near Verdun, where he was constantly under fire when performing his duty to pick up wounded soldiers from the trenches. Henry took a commission to serve with the French Army and enrolled in its transportation school. The French government awarded him the Croix de Guerre for gallantry under fire. When the U.S. entered the war, Henry resigned his commission in the French army and rejoined his Pennsylvania National Guard unit, the 53rd Field Artillery Brigade, 28th Division. He returned to the U.S., and received training as an aerial observer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It seems that, in early 1918, he returned a second time to France. In August 1918, German bombing squadrons attacked nightly, and Henry, then a lieutenant and personal aide to General Price, was killed south of Arcis-le-Ponsart while returning from an air field. He was 23. The bulk of this eight linear feet collection reflects Henry's personal life as a son, soldier, friend and lover, during the last three years of his life 1916 to 1918. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.76.17 | | | | Extent: | 8.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1790-1806 | | | | Abstract: | Antonio Leon y Gama, an astronomer sometimes considered the first Mexican archaeologist, provided the first European account of Aztec archaeology. His description of the discovery of the "two stones",
Descripcion Histórica y Cronológica de las dos Piedras (Mexico, 1791) -- the Coatlicue and Sun Stone (a massive sacrificial stone and calendar) emphasized the sophistication and high scientific and artistic achievements of the Aztecs, responding to and quickening the stirring of Mexican nationalism. Leon y Gama died in Mexico City on September 12, 1802
William E. Hulings' translation of Leon y Gama's
Descripcion Histórica y Cronológica de las dos Piedras reflects the intense early American interest in the archaeological marvels of Aztec Mexico. Made in 1818, the manuscript also includes ethnographic notes on the Aztecs, particularly on Aztec religion, and is divided into three sections with separate pagination: "An historical and chronological description of two stones found under ground, in the great square of the City of Mexico, in the years 1790" (84p.), "Notes to Antonio de Leon y Gama's Work" (19p.), and "Translated from the Diary of Mexico, for Augt. 5th 1806" (3p.). | | | | Call #: | Mss.913.72.L55 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1849-1979 | | | | Abstract: | During the mid- to late-1970s, the American Institute of Physics sponsored a project to conduct oral history interviews documenting the recent history of astrophysics, eventually accumulating over 400 hours of fully transcribed and edited audio tapes. The project organizers placed a particular emphasis on documenting the various subdisciplines of cosmology and astronomical spectroscopy.
The History of Modern Astrophysics Collection is an important resource for the history of astrophysics in the latter half of the twentieth century. The collection is arranged in two series, the first consisting of transcripts of 52 interviews of 46 astrophysicists recorded between 1976 and 1979 by members of the Center for the History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics. The second series consists of 65 reels of microfilm of significant sets of correspondence for individual astrophysicists. The original oral history tape recordings are housed at AIP. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.13 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |
