| | Creator: | Charnay, Désiré, 1828-1915 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Abbot-Charnay Photograph Collection
| | | | Dates: | 1859-1882 | | | | Abstract: | A traveler, archaeologist, and photographer, Désiré Charnay (1828-1915) was one of the most important early expeditionary photographers. During his tours of Yucatan, Oaxaca, and Chiapas in 1858-1860 and 1880-1886, Charnay became one of the first to use photography in documenting the great Meso-American archaeological sites and to make ethnographic photographs of indigenous Mexicans. His major publications
Cités et Ruines Américaines (Paris, 1862) and
Les Anciennes Villes du Nouveau Monde (Paris, 1885) are important transitional works to the later scientific archaeology of Alfred Maudslay.
The collection of photographs taken by Desire Charnay are representative of the range of images he took of Meso-American archaeological sites during three tours of Mexico in 1858-1860 and 1880-1886. Although some of the images have suffered an unfortunate degree of fading, they convey the power and fascination that these sites held for Charnay and his contemporaries, and include some of the best early examples of the use of photography in the documentation of Mexican archaeology. The collection includes 123 images of the sites at Tula, Teotihuacan, Iztaccihuatl, Chichen Itza, Comalcalco, and Palenque, of archaeological specimens held at the Museum of Mexico, and of landscape and villages in Yucatan, Chiapas, and Oaxaca, as well as a series of Lacandon, Mayan, Mixtec, and Yucatec "racial types." | | | | Call #: | Mss.913.72.Ab23 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1825-1870 | | | | Abstract: | Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873, APS 1860), geologist, was an important figure in the development of the modern discipline of geology. He was educated at Cambridge, being ordained in 1817. An excellent field geologist, he did significant work interpreting complex old rock in such places as Devonshire (naming the Devonian Period after that location), Cornwall, and the Lake District, correlating his findings with strata in places such as Germany. Sedgwick first interpreted strata from the period he named Cambrian. He served in many professional organizations and was honored for his work with the Wollaston and Copley medals. Sedgwick, a Liberal in politics, served on committees that reformed the administration of university education. Despite being a friend of Charles Darwin's, Sedgwick was critical of the materialist bent of Darwinian thought.
The 37 letters in the collection were acquired at various times, mainly through purchase, and assembled for the collection. The letters span the dates 1825-1870. Individually most letters are not especially significant, but collectively they touch on most aspects of Sedgwick's life and career. There are letters about Sedgwick's work on university reform, the Geological Museum at Cambridge, lectures, colleagues, travel, health, and family. Only one letter in the collection delves into detail about Sedgwick's geologic work. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.Se25L | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1915-1923 | | | | Abstract: | Having inherited a fortune from her father, the middle-aged Adela C. Breton (1849-1923) began to indulge her interest in travel and archaeology. Between 1894 and 1908, Breton took thirteen excursions to the Mayan archaeological sites in Yucatan, Mexico, researching the artwork and producing valuable watercolor paintings of the ruins. She died in 1923, during a trip to attend the International Congress of Americanists in Rio de Janeiro.
The Breton Papers consist of one hundred letters written by Adela Breton to her friend and relative Ella Lewis of Philadelphia. Although they offer little insight into Breton's archaeological interests, they do provide a glimpse of her personality and her opinions on everything from American immigration law to the First World War, the malice of Germans, and her experiences traveling in western Canada. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.B754 | | | | Extent: | 0.1 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | Bulk, 1869-1910 | | | | Abstract: | Albert Charles Peale (1849-1913), the great-grandson of Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), was a geologist for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and its predecessor agency, a member of the Ferdinand Hayden expeditions that explored and mapped the western United States, an author in geology, mineralogy, and paleobotany, and an aide at the United States National Museum (today the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History). Edwin Roger Kirk (1884-1955) corresponded with Frank Springer about crinoids; assisted Edward Ulrich in studying sediments of the Appalachians; surveyed the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, and southeastern Alaska as a USGS paleontologist; and collected the papers of Peale and other geologists. Peale’s correspondence (1868-1912, bulk 1870s-80s) relate to various federal geological expeditions. Letters between Peale and William Rush Taggart, the largest single portion of the series, focus on matters of congressional funding. Kirk’s series (1900-09) contains the correspondence of Kirk and other geologists; most frequent are letters from Frank Springer to Kirk relating to rock formations. The collection also contains several diaries and sketchbooks from Peale (bulk 1872-77), including those kept during the Hayden expeditions, correspondence relating to the Geological Survey of Kentucky (1888-1893), and miscellaneous letters and memorabilia (c. 1820s-1940s), often relating to the Peale family. | | | | Call #: | Mss.SMs.Coll.5 | | | | Extent: | 2.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | Rochas d'Aiglun, Albert de, 1837-1914 | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Albert de Rochas Papers
| | | | Dates: | Bulk, 1882-1908 | | | | Abstract: | A military officer and civilian superintendent of the École Polytechnique in Paris, Albert de Rochas became one of the best known psychic researchers in late nineteenth century France. His interests centered on uncovering the laws behind psychic forces, somnambulism, magnetism and mesmerism, hypnotism, perception, and reincarnation. A prolific writer, he studied a number of Spiritualist and Spiritist mediums, including Maria Mayo (Lina), Eusapia Paladino, and D. D. Home.
Despite the relatively small size of the collection, the papers of Albert de Rochas open an important window onto the development of psychic science in
fin de siecle France and onto the cultural impact of Spiritualism. The collection includes a scattered, but valuable selection of correspondence with fellow psychic researchers, editors, mediums, and other individuals interested in psychic research, and a valuable set of 69 spirit and psychic photographs, that Rochas collected as evidence of psychic forces, and as documentation of séances, mediums, and "sensitives." Rochas' work on the exteriorization of sensibility and studies of Lina, Charles Bailey, and Paladino are relatively well documented, and his interests in the laws of psychic phenomena, reincarnation, and the exmigration of the living soul run throughout. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.106 | | | | Extent: | 4.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1892-1981 | | | | Abstract: | Alfred Irving ("Pete") Hallowell was an anthropologist best known for his studies of Ojibwa culture and world-view, and the innovative use of the Rorschach Test in his studies of the psychological interrelations of individuals and their culture. Early in his career, Hallowell worked as a social case worker for Family Service, and even after moving on to study anthropology in 1920 (M.A.), he carried with him an interest in ethnic and racial culture, developing additional interests in psychological testing. Except for the years 1944-1947, when he taught at Northwestern University, Hallowell spent his entire career at the University of Pennsylvania where he was professor of anthropology, professor of anthropological psychiatry in the Medical School, and curator of social anthropology at the University Museum. A cultural anthropologist, Hallowell's use of clinical psychological methods, especially Rorschach tests, was both innovative and controversial in his discipline. In his research, he concentrated on the Algonkian Indians, especially the Abenaki and Ojibwa Indians of Canada and Wisconsin (Berens River, Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin areas), and the Saulteaux of Berens River.
The Alfred Irving Hallowell Papers (1892-1981) contain correspondence, subject files, manuscripts of published and unpublished works by Hallowell, papers by colleagues and students, research notes kept by Hallowell, with a special emphasis on social organization, personality, behavior, psychology, religion, and folklore. The collection of several hundred photographs provides rich graphic documentation of Hallowell's work among the Ojibwa and Abnaki Indians during the 1930s. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.26 | | | | Extent: | 21.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1846-1903 | | | | Abstract: | After receiving his PhB at Yale's Sheffield Scientific School in 1858, Alfred P. Rockwell continued his studies at the Museum of Practical Geology in London and the Bergakademie Freiberg, focused largely on mining engineering and coal geology. After service in the Civil War, he held positions at Yale and MIT before leaving academia in 1873 to pursue other opportunities. He later served as president of the Eastern Rail Road and Treasurer of the Great Falls Manufacturing Company, a textile firm in New Hampshire.
The small collection of the papers of Alfred P. Rockwell document his interest in coal geology during the period of his postgraduate study at the Museum of Practical Geology and the Bergakademie, 1858-1859. Although the correspondence is slight, the collection includes a suite of notes on collieries, coal mining technology, and the economics of coal. Of particular note in the collection are the eight notebooks on mining engineering (some containing sketches), including two volumes of notes on John Percy's lectures at the Museum of Practical Geology, 1858, three volumes kept during his stay at the Bergakademie Freiberg, including one on a course on metallurgy taught by Bernhard von Cotta, 1858-1859, and one of an industrial tour through Germany and Belgium (June 1859). The other volumes include two on collieries in northern England, and one including of production records for the Great Falls Manufacturing Company, 1879-1886. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.R59p | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1867-1913 | | | | Abstract: | A prime exponent of evolutionary theory in the late nineteenth century, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace arrived independently at the theory of natural selection nearly simultaneously with Charles Darwin. The numerous publications that emerged from his extended field excusions into the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia) Wallace resulted in major contributions to evolutionary theory, biogeography, ecology, and ethnography, and made Wallace, by the end of his life, one of the best known naturalists in Britain. A Socialist, social progressive, and Spiritualist, Wallace's distinctive take on evolutionary change differed from the Darwinian mainstream in significant ways.
The Wallace Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of letters written by and to Alfred Russel Wallace, primarily during the last twenty five years of his life. Varied in content, the letters touch on Wallace's views on evolution, Spiritualism, and to a less degree, his progressive social commitments. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.W15a | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1920-1962 | | | | Abstract: | Head of the Historical Division of the Carnegie Institution, the archaeologist Alfred V. Kidder specialized in the cliff dwelling cultures of the American Southwest, and is best remembered for work at Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, and Pecos del Arroyo.
Primarily personal in nature, the exchange of letters between Kidder and his colleague and friend Neil M. Judd provides some details on their work on the archaeology of the Southwest. The 68 letters include sporadic references to excavations at Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, and other archaeological sites, with a few references to other archaeologists and anthropologists. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.K53 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1747 | | | | Abstract: | An early Welsh emigrant to Pennsylvania, David Evans was educated at Yale (1713) before answering the call to Presbyterian pulpits in the Welsh Tract of Delaware and Pennsylvania, and to the church at Pilesgrove, N.J. Written entirely in Latin in 1747 when Evans was 66 years old, the Aliquot Rudimenta Physicae consists of four separate compendia bound together, the Compendium Technologiae, Logicae, Rhetoricae, and Physicae. | | | | Dates: | 1912-1929 | | | | Abstract: | These two diaries were kept by Amelia Smith Calvert on trips to Europe with her husband Philip Powell Calvert. They record little scientific information, although there is mention of some of the entomologists and scientists whom they met (e.g. Professor Robert Newstead of University of Liverpool). In general, her observations are those of a literate and passionate sightseer who records travel events in great detail. The British diary (1912) includes descriptions of Liverpool, Edinburgh, York, Lincoln, Cambridge, Oxford, and London, and observations of the entomological specimens they saw in London. The Europe diary (1929) includes descriptions of Antwerp, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lucerne, Venice (of particular interest), Padua, and Milan. There is a description of P.P. Calvert's examination of insect specimens in the collection of Baron de Sélys-Longchamps in the Institut royal des sciences naturelles de Belgique. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.C13 | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1882-1958 | | | | Abstract: | Formed in 1927 under the initiative of Franz Boas, Edward Sapir, and other academic linguists, the Committee on Native American Languages of the American Council of Learned Societies was charged with documenting the endangered languages of indigenous Americans.
The Collection of the American Council of Learned Socities Committee of Native American Languages is one of the largest and most significant primary resources for study of the indigenous languages of North America. Beginning with the creation of the Committee in 1927, and periodically added to since by the APS, the collection has grown to over 80 linear feet of material representing at least 166 languages and dialects from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The formats range from field notes and ethnographic texts to slip files, vocabularies, lexica, and grammars, and dozens of linguists and Native consultants are represented. Although most of the material was collected in the 1920s and 1930s, a signficant number of items have been added that extends the range of dates represented both backward and forward. | | | | Call #: | Mss.497.3.B63c | | | | Extent: | 80.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1916-1973 | | | | Abstract: | The American Eugenics Society Records is a small, selective collection offering information on various periods of the Society's development, including correspondence, membership records, and formal and informal material on its history. Of particular interest are the records of the Society's numerous committees, including the Executive Education, Population Genetics Research, Legislative, and local and state committees, and documentation of AES educational initiatives at state fairs and eugenic health exhibits and contests, especially the Fitter Family Contests. A scrapbook containing 97 images of Fitter Family and eugenic health exhibits, 1924-1926, provides valuable visual information of AES activities. One series in the collection relates to the numerous Princeton Conferences and to a genealogical survey of the populations of Shutesbury and Leverett, Massachusetts, and there is also material on the Population Council. The collection largely revolves around Frederick Osborn, the moving force in the Society for most of its later history, and it includes approximately 100 papers written or delivered by Osborn concerning eugenics, genetics, or population related topics. | | | | Call #: | Mss.575.06.Am3 | | | | Extent: | 12.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1743-1984 | | | | Abstract: | Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin, the American Philosophical Society was the first learned society in the United States. For over 250 years, the Society has played an important role in American cultural and intellectual life. Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Society fulfilled the role of a national academy of science, national library and museum, and even patent office. Early members of the Society included Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Stephen Peter Du Ponceau, George Washington, and many other figures prominent in American history.
The Archives of the American Philosophical Society consists of 192.25 linear feet of material, organized into thirteen record groups dating back to 1743. The Society's archives extensively documents not only the organization's historical development but also its role in American history and the history of science and technology. | | | | Call #: | APS.Archives | | | | Extent: | 192.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1784-1828 | | | | Abstract: | Beginning in the 1790s, the American Philosophical Society began to accumulate vocabularies and texts written in Native American languages, guided by Thomas Jefferson's idea of using comparative linguistics to reconstruct the histories of Indian peoples and discern their origins.
The American Indian Vocabularies Collection was initially assembled by the Historical and Literary Committee of the APS for publication in 1816. They include information on seventeen North American languages and one each from the Caribbean and Central America, collected between 1784 and 1828. A number of individuals were invovled in recording the vocabularies, including Benjamin Hawkins, William Thornton, David Campbell, Daniel Smith, Constantine Volney, Constantine Rafinesque, William Vans Murray, John Heckewelder, Martin Duralde, Campanius Holm, and Jefferson himself. Most followed the standardized word set established by Jefferson. | | | | Call #: | Mss.497.V85 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1905-1910 | | | | Abstract: | Norman Leonard Jacobs was an engineer and surveyor with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in Canada. The collection consists of his correspondence with Bessie Frank (later Anathan), an acquaintance from Pittsburgh. Jacobs wrote of daily life in Canadian cities, interactions with First Nations tribes, and daily hardships encountered in the field (extreme cold, snowblindness, and lack of food), but also spoke of his work with pride and enthusiasm. In addition to the letters, Jacobs wrote twenty-eight pages of a "Diary of a Tenderfoot." Also included in the collection are two photobooks and various loose photographs, which display various aspects of camp life, details of work sites and landscape, as well as First Nations families, camps, and modes of transportation. | | | | Call #: | Mss.SMs.Coll.13 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 ln. ft. | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1777 (September 28 and October 8) | | | | Abstract: | Major John André (1750-1780) was a British officer during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known in America for his attempt to facilitate Benedict Arnold’s surrender of West Point to the British in 1780, but was known in his time as a capable, cosmopolitan officer, who served an interesting and varied career until his death in 1780. A participant in many of the Revolutionary War’s most famous battles, André was twice captured by the American army, and served well enough to earn two promotions and numerous important assignments during the conflict. This eight-page letter chronicles the Philadelphia campaign of 1777 and includes descriptions of the Battles of Brandywine, Paoli and Germantown. | | | | Call #: | Mss.SMs.Coll.7 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Item(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1799-1882 | | | | Abstract: | One of the most important natural historians in nineteenth century Britain, Charles Darwin provided the first compelling mechanism to account for organismal evolutionary change. Although lacking a coherent model of heredity, Darwin's natural selection has exerted an enormous influence over the biological sciences and since the introduction of Mendelian genetics, had remained the key unifying principle in the discipline.
The APS Darwin Papers are a large a valuable assemblage of Darwin's correspondence with scientific colleagues, including Charles Lyell and George J. Romanes. They are included in the print version of the

| | | | Dates: | 1903-1962 | | | | Abstract: | The spacecraft Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Fla., on July 16, 1969, with the mission to become the first to "perform a manned lunar landing and return." After entering lunar orbit on July 20, the landing module
Eagle separated from the command module
Columbia (piloted by Michael Collins) and descended to the lunar surface. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin made a soft landing in the Sea of Tranquility, and following a quick meal -- but postponing a scheduled sleep -- they exited to become the first men to walk on the surface of the moon.
The Apollo 11 collection contains transcripts of communications between Mission Control in Houston, Tex., and the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the first landing on the moon, July 20, 1969. Divided into two segments, both titled "Apollo 11 Mission Commentary," these transcripts includes a record of transmissions during the landing itself (27p.) and during the first moonwalk (27p.). Both are autographed by Armstrong. | | | | Call #: | Mss.629.1388.Un33a | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1857-1882 | | | | Abstract: | One of the most prominent scientific refugees from the political turmoil of 1848, Arnold Guyot made fundamental contributions to the study of geology, glaciology, and meteorology on two continents. After emigrating to the United States, Guyot established himself as Professor of Geology and Physical Geography at Princeton, remaining untilhis death in 1884.
The Guyot Collection consists of 61 letters written by Louis Agassiz (15 items), his wife Elizabeth (32), and their son Alexander (14), to their friend and fellow naturalist, Arnold Guyot. Primarily personal in nature, the letters reflect a long and intimate friendship, making frequent mention of family and mutual friends. There is, however, comparatively little in the collection relating to their respective scientific endeavors, with only a few references to the situation at the Museum of Comparative Zoology and at Princeton, to publications of various sorts, to the difficulties of their mutual friend Leo Lesquereux, and to other colleagues. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.G98 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1927-1999 | | | | Abstract: | Ashley Montagu (1905-1999), physical anthropologist, was a prominent figure in American intellectual life. British by birth, educated at University College London and the London School of Economics, then Columbia University in New York City, Montagu was a persistent advocate for gender and racial equality. He was a tireless activist for human understanding and child welfare in particular. Departing from academe in 1955, a victim of McCarthyite hysteria, he was a remarkably prolific writer and speaker, eventually publishing more than 50 books, over 40 of them after he left the academy. Montagu continued to lobby passionately against the primacy of race in discussions of intellect and skill, and undertook works in a wide variety of fields, from evolution to parenting. Some of his most significant works include Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race (1942), the UNESCO Statement on Race (1951), Man and Aggression (1968) and his novel The Elephant Man (1971), which became the basis for an award winning play and movie. Ashley Montagu’s contributions to the spread of scientific knowledge and human understanding make him one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.109 | | | | Extent: | 57.0 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1764-1799 | | | | Abstract: | The amateur astronomer and scientific instrument maker John Dovaston was born into a long-established Shropshire family on April 25, 1740, the son of John Dovaston and Margaret (Rogers). While still in his twenties, Dovaston used the proceeds from his sugar plantations in Jamaica to build "The Nursery," an estate near West Felton, near Shrewsbury, where he lived until his death on April 4, 1808.
Dovaston's astronomical notebook contains observations on the transits of Venus and Mercury, 1761-1799; the eclipse of the moon, July 1776; and the comet of August 1797; as well as more general notes on stellar positions, astronomical instruments, calendars, and the measurement of latitude and longitude. The volume is illustrated, and includes copies of two letters received from his fellow amateur astronomer, Waldron Hill. Dovaston's interest in astrology is suggested by his detailed notes on casting a horoscope ("The Manner of Erecting a scheme or figure of the Heavens"), as well as by the presence of nativities for his son (1782) and for William Dovaston (1765). | | | | Call #: | Mss.522.D75 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |
