| | | | Dates: | 1903-1962 | | | | Abstract: | The spacecraft Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Fla., on July 16, 1969, with the mission to become the first to "perform a manned lunar landing and return." After entering lunar orbit on July 20, the landing module
Eagle separated from the command module
Columbia (piloted by Michael Collins) and descended to the lunar surface. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin made a soft landing in the Sea of Tranquility, and following a quick meal -- but postponing a scheduled sleep -- they exited to become the first men to walk on the surface of the moon.
The Apollo 11 collection contains transcripts of communications between Mission Control in Houston, Tex., and the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the first landing on the moon, July 20, 1969. Divided into two segments, both titled "Apollo 11 Mission Commentary," these transcripts includes a record of transmissions during the landing itself (27p.) and during the first moonwalk (27p.). Both are autographed by Armstrong. | | | | Call #: | Mss.629.1388.Un33a | | | | Extent: | 2.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1777 (September 28 and October 8) | | | | Abstract: | Major John André (1750-1780) was a British officer during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known in America for his attempt to facilitate Benedict Arnold’s surrender of West Point to the British in 1780, but was known in his time as a capable, cosmopolitan officer, who served an interesting and varied career until his death in 1780. A participant in many of the Revolutionary War’s most famous battles, André was twice captured by the American army, and served well enough to earn two promotions and numerous important assignments during the conflict. This eight-page letter chronicles the Philadelphia campaign of 1777 and includes descriptions of the Battles of Brandywine, Paoli and Germantown. | | | | Call #: | Mss.SMs.Coll.7 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Item(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1986 | | | | Abstract: | Founded in 1838 by merchant and philanthropist Nathan Dunn (1782-1844), the Chinese museum informed and entertained Philadelphians from 1838-1841 with its variety of objects, art, and life-size figures in recreated Chinese room settings. For the 50,000 or so people who visited, the museum provided a window into a world that few of them ever would have the chance to experience firsthand.
In his 1986 B.A. thesis at the University of Pennsylvania, Aaron Caplan described American diplomatic, commercial, and religious involvement in China and how the experiences of Anglo-American traders and missionaries influenced public perceptions of China and the Chinese. He explored how, in this context, Nathan Dunn's Chinese Museum educated and entertained the public and how it fit into the world of Philadelphia museums in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. | | | | Call #: | Mss.069.C17n | | | | Extent: | 0.1 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | unknown | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Nautilus (Submarine) Photograph Collection
| | | | Dates: | 1931 | | | | Abstract: | In 1931, the
Nautilus, an O-12 class submarine, was fitted out to undertake an expedition to gather meteorological and oceanographical information while venturing beneath polar ice floes to the north pole. Although the crew did gather some useful information, the expedition was fated to suffer delays, accidents, and perhaps even sabotage. Although mechanical problems ruined any hope of reaching the pole, by late August, 1931, the
Nautilus had maneuvered to the edge of the Arctic ice cap and was able to dive beneath a few floes. On its return, however, damage from storms and engine failure led the crew to scuttle the ship a few miles off the coast of Bergen, Norway. The
Nautilus Collection is comprised of approximately 60 photographs, plus assorted newspaper clippings, postcards, and a few other miscellaneous items. The photographs document the voyage of the
Nautilus from Camden, New Jersey, to the Brooklyn Naval Yard, and New London, Connecticut, across the Atlantic to the Arctic regions. The collection includes formal and informal photographs of the submarine, its interior, and ice floes, along with portraits of many of the ship's officers. | | | | Call #: | Mss.Ms.Coll.101 | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1844-1846 | | | | Abstract: | After emigrating from Germany to Philadelphia in 1796, Peter Adolph Grotjahn established himself within the city's mercantile community, trading opportunistically both inland and coastwise as far as the Caribbean. In 1812, he began publishing a commercial newspaper,
Grotjan's Philadelphia Public Sale Reports and he became increasingly active in local Democratic Party politics.
The APS copy of Peter Grotjahn's memoir is a typescript copy of an original volume held at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Written for his grandchildren, the memoir begins with a relatively brief genealogical discussion, but concentrates on his personal and political life and commercial experiences prior to 1817. The last section of the autobiography was completed posthumously from notes, and includes extracts from Grotjahn's diary as late as 1844. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.G913 | | | | Extent: | 1.0 Volume(s) | | | | Sections: |

| | | | Dates: | 1911-1947 | | | | Abstract: | In 1912, the University of California, Berkeley, became the first university in the nation to form a separate Department of Genetics. The first two appointments in the department went to plant geneticists Ernest Brown Babcock and Roy E. Clausen, and as the department grew slowly, shifting slightly away from its roots in agricultural science, it gained a strong reputation as an important center for research in several areas in genetics and evolutionary biology.
The U.C. Berkeley Department of Genetics Collection contains a selective sampling of correspondence relating to the organization and early history of the nation's first Department of Genetics. Centered in the years 1912-1930, the collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from Babcock and Clausen, pertaining to their research, administrative matters, and the genetical community. Prominent among their correspondents are George H. Shull, Thomas Hunt Morgan, A. H. Sturtevant, and H. J. Muller. | | | | Call #: | Mss.378.794.C12gen | | | | Extent: | 0.5 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |

| | Creator: | unknown | Requires cookie* | | | Title: | Zebulon Montgomery Pike biographical materials, 1780-1956
| | | | Dates: | 1780-1956 | | | | Abstract: | Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) was an explorer and soldier, most often remembered two exploratory trips to the newly acquired Louisiana territory. The first of these trips was to the source of the Mississippi River in 1805; the second was to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red Rivers in 1806. Because General James Wilkinson was responsible for organizing Pike’s two expeditions, when the conspiracy charges again Aaron Burr implicated Wilkinson, suspicion was, for a short time, also focused on Pike. Pike worked his way up the ranks of the United States Army, becoming a brigadier-general during the War of 1812. He was killed in the Battle of York in Upper Canada (now Toronto) in 1813. | | | | Call #: | Mss.B.P63 | | | | Extent: | 0.25 Linear feet | | | | Sections: |
