Members
Election to the APS honors extraordinary accomplishments in all fields. The APS is unusual among learned societies because its membership is composed of top scholars from a wide variety of academic disciplines. Members are organized into five classes:
- Class 1 Mathematical and Physical Sciences
- Class 2 Biological Sciences
- Class 3 Social Sciences
- Class 4 Humanities
- Class 5 The Arts, Professions, and Leaders in Public & Private Affairs
As of the April 2012 elections the APS has 1022 members. There are 847 Resident members (citizens or residents of the United States) and 175 International members (formerly called "Foreign" members) representing more than two dozen countries.
Nomination and Election
The APS is an honorary society that elects new members to their ranks each year in April. Nominations for membership can only be made by Resident members of the APS.
