Background note
Scientific communications, about 560 in number, originally a part of the "Archives" but removed at an earlier date, bound in volumes, and arranged chronologically under one of seven topics. They are now organized alphabetically in one series under the author's name.

Scope and content
A portion of the APS Archives, the Manuscript Communications consists of letters and papers on a variety of topics sent to the APS between the 1770s and 1830s. Many of the papers were read at meetings of the Society, some were published in the APS Transactions, and others were submitted for consideration for the premiums offered by the APS for best paper on the topic of education.

Once part of the general APS Archives, the Manuscript Communications were separated at an early date, arranged in chronological order, and bound into volumes under seven topical series:
  1. Mechanics, Machinery, and Engineering
  2. Trade, Navigation, Manufactures, Agriculture, Economics
  3. Medicine, Anatomy, Physiology
  4. Natural History
  5. Trade, Commerce, Navigation, Manufactures, Agriculture, Husbandry and Economics
  6. Natural Philosophy
  7. Mathematics and Astronomy

The Manuscript Communications have subsequently been disbound and rearranged in a single alphabetic series, with a reference to their original topical series.
