Latin America on our Shelves

The APS presents highlights of its Latin American collection to illustrate the close political and scientific connections enjoyed by the United States with Latin America over the centuries.

Scientific field books from expeditions to Mexico and Central America, sketches rendered by Jose Castaneda and Titian Peale in the field, and political newspapers  showing how Latin American leaders looked to the young United States for guidance in developing their own republican principles are on display as well as samples from collections that pre-date the formation of the United States.
