Lewis and Clark Illustrations

The following is a comprehensive listing of illustrations that appear in the Lewis and Clark journals held at the American Philosophical Society (APS), the Missouri Historical Society (MHS), and the Beinecke Library (Yale). Requests for reproduction of materials held by MHS or Yale must be addressed separatedly to those institutions.

This inventory includes low resolution scans of all images held by the APS, along with selected images of the journals themselves, illustrations associated with Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, and a small selection of journal entries. Many of the images presented here are details of larger files. Images held by MHS or Yale are listed, but not displayed.

The best current edition of the journals of Lewis and Clark is Gary Moulton's multi-volume The Journals of Lewis and Clark (Lincoln, Neb.: Univ. of Nebraska Press, 1986-1997). In the table below, "Moulton #" refers to the volume and page number on which each illustration is reproduced. "ID #" refers to the volume and/or page number corresponding to the original illustration.

Click on a thumbnail to view a low-resolution scan of a selected image.

Please see our rights and reproductions page for complete information concerning requests for reproductions or publication. When ordering, please refer to the ID #.

The APS has recently made available for purchase a facsimile edition of three of the original journals of Lewis and Clark and a reprinting of the Map of the Track of Lewis and Clark that appeared in the first edition of the journals edited by Nicholas Biddle in 1814. Information about the purchase of these facsimiles is available through the APS Publications website.
