The Lewis and Clark Journals contain huge volumes of data and constitute one of the many treasures held at the APS. In addition to recording geographical, temperature, and weather notes, these volumes contain meticulous observations on the geology and biology of the region and are enlivened with images of animals and plants, Indian artifacts, canoes, costumes, and maps.

Two other substantial Lewis and Clark collections exist at the Missouri Historical Society and the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

The APS has made available for purchase a facsimile edition of three of the original journals of Lewis and Clark and a reprinting of the Map of the Track of Lewis and Clark that appeared in the first edition of the journals edited by Nicholas Biddle in 1814. Information about the purchase of these facsimiles is available through the APS Publications website.
