How do you create an easy, modular, environmentally sustainable greenhouse for the 21 st century? “Look to nature,” says Jenny Sabin, an architect and designer. Sabin, a 2011 Pew Fellow, has been cited for her work “at the forefront of a new direction in architectural practice that applies insights and theories from biology and mathematics to the design of material structures.” In this talk, she will explore the intersections of architecture, nature, and technology in her creation of a “greenhouse of the future,” installed in the American Philosophical Society’s (APS) Jefferson Garden. Inspired by the historic greenhouses featured in the APS Museum’s current exhibition, Of Elephants and Roses: Encounters with French Natural History, 1790-1830, this cutting-edge pre-fab structure is the centerpiece of The Greenhouse Projects at the APS Museum. The talk will conclude with a walkthrough of the greenhouse led by the architect.
