 Abstract:  This bound volume contains approximately forty-four content rich letters written to Caspar Wistar, a prominent Philadelphian and scientist. Wistar’s wide-ranging scientific interests are captured in the broad content of these letters. Topics of discussion include APS business, distillation, fossils and skeletons, scientific expeditions, and various letters of introductions sent to Wistar. A significant number are written in French.

The bulk of the collection relates to Jane Aitken's life and dates from 1800 to 1814, the height of Jane Aitken’s business career. Much of the correspondence is between Aitken and John Vaughan, a wealthy Philadelphia merchant who served as Jane’s investor and benefactor when she fell on hard times.

 Abstract:  This collection contains a series of letters from Richard Price, a prominent English minister who was also a prominent supporter of the American Revolution. There are several letters that are written in code. Prominent correspondents include Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Chauncy, and Benjamin Rush. The collection contains essays, lectures, and letters to and from Robert Hare, the preeminent chemist in the United States during much of the nineteenth century. But as this collection shows, Hare was far more than a chemist. His essays and lectures touch on an array of topics, including discussions of democracy, currency, history, slavery, among others. The APS collection captures the sophistication of Hare’s thought.
