 Abstract:  This dictionary of Native American language dates to 1771 and is from the Great Lakes region, an area often called the pays d’en haut. The dictionary is in French. The collection came to the APS from the Academy of Natural Sciences. It is bound in a rather unique white, soft leather cover.

 Title:  Letters, 1798-1811, to Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst (Henry) Muhlenberg     
 Dates:  1798-1811 
 Abstract:  The APS has approximately nineteen letters written between Christian Denke and Gothilff Muhlenberg, one of the sons of Henry Muhlenberg. Gothilff followed his father's calling and was a prominent religious and cultural leader. Muhlenberg served as a pastor of Lutheran Church in Lancaster and became a prominent educator, serving as President of Franklin College – now Franklin and Marshall. The APS has a large amount of Muhlenberg’s papers, including a large and detailed collection of his journals from the early republic; all of which are in German or occasionally Latin. Muhlenberg had a keen interest in natural history, especially botany, and much of his work is detailed in these journals, as are regular daily activities. The Denke correspondence is part of this larger collection of Muhlenberg papers.

 Title:  L'Oeil du Maitre     
 Dates:  1778 
 Abstract:  “L’Oeil du Maitre” is a treatise on governance written by Pierre Berny, a well-known Frenchman in the eighteenth century. During the Seven Years’ War, he served in Germany. After retiring in 1757, he established a school in Brussels and gained a reputation as a master draftsman. Berny sent this manuscript to Benjamin Franklin in February 1778, when Franklin was in France as the American envoy. This bound volume, although handwritten, is formatted in such a way as to give this essay the appearance of a pamphlet.

 Abstract:  This volume is one of two from the sixteenth or seventeenth century Latin America that deals with the Kiche language. The two volumes contain translations of Kiche, common phrases, verbs, and a prayer. The bound volume is not printed, perhaps because its content was too controversial, and is instead written in a beautiful script.

The Kaqchikel are an ethnic group of the Mayans.

 Abstract:  This collection contains a number of musical compositions by Madame Anne Louise Boyvin d’Hardancourt Brillon de Juoy, a prominent Parisian salon hostess and musician. Her most famous composition, Le Marche des Insurgents, which was inspired by the American victory at Saratoga, is included in this collection. Many of these compositions are handwritten and appear to be from the eighteenth century, although it is unclear when they were written and who wrote them.
