Challenge Opportunities
From time to time, the American Philosophical Society has been the recipient of generous challenge opportunities extended by individuals, foundations, and government agencies. A recent Challenge Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation enabled the Society to build a $6 million endowment for research grants in the humanities and social sciences, principally on behalf of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and younger faculty. Another recent Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities resulted in a $2.5 million endowment for Library technology. Currently, the following challenge is in progress on behalf of the planned giving program.
The Mainwaring Planned Giving Challenge
Every dollar committed through bequests or other planned gifts
will be matched 100%
Bruce and Peggy Mainwaring, Co-Chairs of the Society’s Planned Giving Committee, have offered a challenge of up to $1 million to encourage APS Members and Friends to support the planned giving program. The challenge will terminate on March 31, 2013, at which time the Mainwarings will add an unrestricted amount to their wills equivalent to the amount pledged for new planned gifts registered with the APS since November 2011. The minimum amount for a bequest commitment is $10,000, and the minimum for a life income gift “remainder interest” is $5,000. Participants in the challenge may restrict their gifts for any purpose that supports the Society’s needs and goals. Information on types of planned gifts may be found on this web site at Planned Giving: Exploring the Options.
