Challenge and Matching Grant Opportunities

From time to time, the American Philosophical Society has been the recipient of challenge grants and matching grants from foundations and government agencies. A recent Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities enabled the Society to create a $2.5 million endowment for Library technology. Another such grant is currently in progress, providing donors with the opportunity to increase the magnitude of their gifts to the Society.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Matching Grant
for Research Grants in the Humanities and Social Sciences:
Every dollar given will be matched by 50%

The Mellon Foundation has awarded a matching grant of $2 million to the APS, provided the Society can raise $4 million in contributions by December 31, 2012.  Pledges are welcome but must be paid by that date. The resulting endowment of $6 million will provide income for the support of research grants of all sizes, largely for younger scholars, in humanities and social science disciplines. Within this program, donors may name endowments of $50,000 or more.
