Abstract

Consists of samples of a larger set of material excerpted by the collector from his original field recordings. Conversations, elicited word lists with Spanish equivalents, and texts in three Guatemalan languages. Recorded in Guatemala in 1969.

The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "A 5-minute unglossed rambling text from a 65-year-old Mixco female. The text is not a good example of Pocomam Central, but no fluent speaker in Mixco could be found." The name of the speaker is not identified in the collector's documentation.

Central Pokomam language. This program is a sample made by the collector of a larger set of material on the collector's original tapes. The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "1 hour 53 minutes from a 26-year-old female speaker of Pocomam Central from Chinautla. Almost all the material is glossed in Spanish and includes songs, phrases, sentences, examples of whispering (to determine what changes the phonemic system of Pocomam Central undergoes when whispered), speaking slow (to determine syllabic boundaries), and for lexicostatistic purposes, the Pocomam Central equivalent of M. Mayers' 250-list as presented in _Languages of Guatemala_." The name of the speaker is not identified in the collector's documentation.

Central Pokomam language. This program is a sample made by the collector of a larger set of material on the collector's original tapes. The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "1 hour 32 minutes froma 69-year-old male speaker from Palín. The material includes [the Pocomam Central equivalent of M. Mayers' 250-list as presented in _Languages of Guatemala_], phrases, sentences (all glossed) and some short texts. The texts are explained in Spanish but are not glossed, since the informant was not capable of performing this task. No other informant from Palín could be obtained." The name of the speaker is not identified in the collector's documentation.

Central Pokomam language. This program is a sample made by the collector of a larger set of material on the collector's original tapes. The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "A 1 hour 25 minute dialogue in Pocomam Central between [a 22 year-old female Ladina (mixed Spanish-Indian) of Chinautla] and a monolingual, approximately 32-year-old female of Chinautla. The conversation ranges over many topics including sorcery and disease, the Indian woman having had considerable first-hand experience as a vicitm of sorcery. This material is by far the most importnat and valuable item that I collected." The name of the speaker is not identified in the collector's documentation.

The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "17 minutes from an 18-year-old female speaker of Pocomam Central from Chinautla. The Pocomam Central equivalent of some Spanish sentences are elicited from the informant, and she also gives a short text in Pocomam Central and Spanish (the text has been glossed.) Although this informant has the Pocomam Central phonological system intact, she is not a fluent speaker, since her Pocomam Central grammar and vocabulary are sub-standard." The full original program is described in the collector's documenation as follows: "5 minutes of Mam from a 32-year-old male speaker of Huehuetenango. he speaks first in Mam and then gives the Spanish equivalent. His texts discuss illness, bruheria, and medicinal plants all in relation to his village." The name of the speaker is not identified in the collector's documentation.
