Joyce Mary McDonough is a linguist specialising in phonetics and phonology of endangered languages, currently professor and chair of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester, which she joined in 2005. McDonough obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1990 with a thesis titled "The morphology and phonology of Navajo verbs", with advisors Emmon Bach and Ken Hale. She then worked at the National Institutes of Health postdoc for "Sounds of the World's Languages", with phonologist Peter Lagefoged, at the University of California Los Angeles, from 1991-1993. While there in 1993, McDonough received a Phillips Fund grant to document Navajo and Jicarilla Apache, from which this collection arose. Many publications on Navajo have since been made, notably in 2003 "The Navajo Sound System" (Kluwer Academic Press), a book-length study including phonology, morphology, spectral analysis and prosody. She was also coordinator for the NSF-funded (2013, grant number 0853929) project "Dene Speech Atlas" with the Universities of Rochester and Alberta, part of ongoing work into phonetic work in the Dene languages. More recent research has been into the coding of speech patterns in the brain, and the contribution of acoustic phonetics to morphology in Dene languages. McDonough has received a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship.
