Restrictions

Restrictions on Access:

Access to the audio in this collection is currently restricted due to the high likelihood of its cultural sensitivity, pending further review. Please consult the Curator of Native American Materials for more information.

Processing information

The original phonograph discs on which this material was recorded were sent, along with other, separate wire spool and phonograph disc recording collections at the APS Library, to the Library of Congress in 1970, where they were transferred to reel-to-reel tapes which were sent back to the APS, the originals remaining at Library of Congress. All of the reels received back were then lumped together into a new, artificial collection, Mss.Rec.82. They were digitized in 2010. In April 2015, new finding aids, such as this one, were created to restore the original call numbers of the materials and make their contents easier to distinguish.

As some of the reels in Mss.Rec.82 contain recordings from multiple collections, the recordings could not physically be separated out into their original collections. The tape numbers on the recordings below therefore reflect the numbering and location on the Mss.Rec.82 tapes.

Collection digitized and cataloged by Brian Carpenter during the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded audio digitization project, 2008-2014.

Related material

Typescript transcripts (56 p.) of a majority of the songs are available in the Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection.

Note on "False Face"

"False Face" is a term for Haudenosaunee Medicine Masks that was applied by the original collector to this recording. The term is considered both inaccurate and offensive by many Haudenosaunee communities.
