Date: 1917-1981 | Size: 11 Linear feet, Ca. 4000 items

Abstract

This collection includes correspondence (4 linear feet), diaries, manuscripts of publications, and research data (6 linear feet.). Mooney-Slater (1902- 1981) was born Rose Camille LeDieu and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her BS at Newcomb College, MS at Tulane University and PhD from the University of Chicago (1932) where she worked under Will Zachariasen. Recognized as an outstanding crystallographer, she was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, appointed chair of the physics department at Tulane University, worked at the Metallurgical Laboratory under the auspices of the Manhattan District at the University of Chicago, and on the structure of crystals and crystalline materials using X-ray diffraction.

Background note

Rose Mooney-Slater (1902- 1981), born Rose Camille LeDieu, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Valedictorian of her 1918 high school class, artist, champion debater, and creative writer, she received her BS at Newcomb College (Tulane University) in 1926, MS at Tulane University (1929), and PhD from the University of Chicago (1932) where she worked under Will Zachariasen. Rose LeDieu married Carroll Mooney in 1922 and they were divorced in 1945.

Recognized as an outstanding crystallographer, she started her career as an Instructor in physics (1927-1930), Assistant Professor (1932-1936), Associate Professor (1936-1939) at Newcomb College, the Women's College of Tulane University. In 1939 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to study in Amsterdam, Netherlands, but to the disappointment of many, she had to return abruptly to the United States because war was declared. As she noted in her diary, September 1, 1939, "Now that war is declared, I must go, I suppose. It is better to see my beautiful plans go glimmering." By October, she set sail for M.I.T. and worked in John Slater's new X-Ray lab.

In 1941, she returned to New Orleans to begin her appointment as chair of the physics department at Newcomb College, and when Newcomb College and Tulane University combined their science programs, she was appointed chair of the new co-ed physics department. (1948-1952). Summers were spent doing research at Johns Hopkins, Cal Tech, University of Michigan, Oak Ridge in Tennessee, Manhattan Project (Argonne Lab) in Chicago, to name a few. From 1952-1956 she worked for the National Bureau of Standards as a senior physicist and moved to M.I.T. (1956-1966) as a research physicist following her marriage to John Slater. She was active in the Southeastern section of the American Physical Society.

In 1966, she and John moved permanently to Gainesville, Florida where Dr. Rose Slater finished her career at the University of Florida as a research professor in the department of chemistry (1966-1974).

Scope and content

This collection includes correspondence (4 linear feet), diaries, manuscripts of publications, and research data and notes (6 linear feet.). The diaries (1917-1954) include detailed information about her personal and professional life. There is a diary describing Holland just as war was declared in 1939 when she had to cut her Guggenheim Fellowship short and book passage back to the United States within two weeks time with many others hurrying to leave Europe. The collection includes a Friendship Book from her high school days at Esplanade Avenue Girl's High School (1914-1917) which contains memorabilia such as her medal declaring her the Exposition Champion of Big Ideas Debate, photographs of high school friends, newspaper articles, and dance cards.

The correspondence with H. Anne Plettinger (1943-1976, 20 folders), a student and research assistant at the University of Chicago, are of particular note. The Research series includes work done at the Argonne National Laboratory, under the auspices of the Manhattan District at the Metallurgical Laboratory, University of Chicago, and on the structure of crystals and crystalline materials using X-ray diffraction.

Some of the papers were destroyed or damaged by fire and water when the moving van that moved the Slaters to Florida in 1966 crashed in transit.
