Abstract

This collection pertains principally to the Cherokees of North Carolina and Oklahoma and to their language, ethnography, folklore, archeology, history, music, etc. Includes Indian studies and correspondence by Gillespie, notes on Indian dances and linguistics, bibliographies, publications of the Archaeological Society of Brigham Young University, and newspaper clippings. Also comprised of materials on: Apache, Calusa, Chippewa, Choctaw, Delaware, Eskimo, Fox, Iroquois, Karankawa, Kuchin, Louchens, Mattaponi, Muskogee, Navajo, Onondaga, Pueblo, Sauk, Seminole, Seneca, Shawnee, Sioux, Slave, Timucua, Tuscarora, Tutelo, and Wyandot. Contains: Gillespie, "A grammar of western dialect of Cherokee language of the Iroquoian family," 1949-1954 (131 pages); "Miscellaneous material on the Cherokee Indians and language"; "Miscellaneous items pertaining to the American Indian."

Scope and content

"A grammar of western dialect of Cherokee language of the Iroquoian family": A discussion of the history of the Sequoyan syllabary; the western (North Carolina) Cherokee; migration; relation of syllabary characters to Cherokee design; phonemics and sound shifts as an indication of relation of Cherokee-Iroquoian to Caddoan languages; phonetics and morphophonemics; free forms vs. bound forms; grammar arranged by semantic categories.

"Miscellaneous material on the Cherokee Indians and language": Materials pertaining to the Western Cherokee Nighthawk Keetowahs, together with dance materials, music, medicinal and ceremonial observations, transcripts from notes, etc. (1951-1952). Includes Alice Marriott, Ethnographic observation of the nighthawk Keetowah, and Gillespie, The Kthula cult of Haiti.

Native American Images note: Nearly 600 photomechanical prints, black and white silver gelatin photographs, ink and pencil sketches, maps, news clipping photographs, and color postcards of Eastern Cherokee Indians, collected and taken by John D. Gillespie while researching Native American music from 1947-1961. Images depict the social life and customs of the Cherokees of western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and Oklahoma with such practices as ball playing, basket weaving, dances, beadwork, pottery and native dress. Also, some individual and group portraits of Junaluska, Sequoyah and Koshare Indian dancers. Includes some materials on Mayan, Cheyenne, Navajo, Choctaw, and Pueblo tribes. Referenced in the Supplement of the Freeman Guide to manuscripts relating to the American Indian.
